Duke's Mike Krzyzewski Declines to Comment on Rasheed Sulaimon Allegations

Matt FitzgeraldMar 2, 2015

Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski refused to comment Monday on sexual assault allegations leveled against Rasheed Sulaimon, a former Blue Devils player who was dismissed from the program in late January.

Krzyzewski fielded four different questions about the allegations during an ACC conference call, declining to address the matter in each instance, according to Yahoo Sports' Pat Forde.

ESPN radio host Adam Gold tweeted a statement from the university (h/t Forde on Twitter) to provide more context as to why Krzyzewski may have opted to remain mum on the Sulaimon issue:

The Duke Chronicle's Emma Baccellieri and Nick Martin reported Monday that the two students who accused Sulaimon of sexual assault made their incidents known to others, though neither took action through the university.

"Separate allegations of sexual assault by Sulaimon came from two female students in the 2013-14 academic year," per Baccellieri and Martin. "Both students voiced allegations publicly, but neither filed a complaint through the Office of Student Conduct or took legal action through the Durham Police Department."

The Chronicle's report notes how Krzyzewski had never previously dismissed a player during his long tenure in Durham. It is essentially uncharted territory for the legendary coach, who never provided a clear, full explanation as to the reasoning behind Sulaimon's dismissal. Monday's report may offer some indication.

Based on university rules, it seems Krzyzewski will be restricted from elaborating on Sulaimon's situation until a prospective investigation unearths more details.

Sulaimon played two-plus seasons for Duke, but he saw his role diminish in each year in terms of minutes and scoring production. The junior guard averaged 7.5 points per contest in 2014-15 before he was dismissed.
