Michigan State vs. Wisconsin: Score, Twitter Reaction from 2015 Regular Season

Rob GoldbergMar 1, 2015

Frank Kaminsky made sure his last home game at Wisconsin was a memorable one as he led his team to a 68-61 win over Michigan State.

The victory moved the Badgers to 14-2 in the Big Ten, clinching at least a share of the conference regular-season title. They have a two-game lead over Maryland with two games remaining on each team's schedule.

Wisconsin's Twitter account highlighted the accomplishment:

Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports noted the team has even greater goals this season:

On the other hand, the Spartans now have to worry about simply getting a bid to the NCAA tournament after losing their second game in a row. Bryn Forbes did his best to carry the team with 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting, including 5-of-5 from deep, although he didn't get enough help from his teammates in the loss.

Nigel Hayes provided 14 points for Wisconsin, but the true star of the day was Kaminsky. Playing on his Senior Day at the Kohl Center, the talented player put on an absolute show with 31 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals.

Head coach Bo Ryan and Kaminsky shared their reactions after the game, via Benjamin Worgull of Scout.com:

This type of performance should have been expected based on what he has done all year long. Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo gave the center a lot of praise earlier in the week, via Matt Charboneau of The Detroit News:

"

There is no question after watching hours and hours of tape that if he's not the player of the year in the country then I question it. I think (Duke's Jahlil) Okafor is a heck of a player and there are some other guys, but this kid has improved so much. He's not shooting as many threes, he's taking it off the dribble more, he's passing better. He's really done a great job.

"

The All-American candidate did not disappoint with a fantastic effort right from the start. As ESPN shared, Kaminsky started off hot as Wisconsin jumped out to an 11-point halftime lead:

At the time, Izzo simply couldn't find anyone who could guard the big man, even trying some strange alternatives, via Joe Rexrode of The Detroit Free Press:

Charboneau added that Branden Dawson wasn't doing much to help out in the low post:

The only person keeping Michigan State remotely competitive early was Forbes, as these stats courtesy of Jim Polzin of the Wisconsin State Journal illustrated:

Although the Spartans were within striking distance at halftime, that quickly changed as Wisconsin scored the first 11 points after intermission to build the lead to 47-25.

As Kevin Gehl of WLNS TV noted, the MSU players didn't appear to have their heads in it for much of the game:

At the same time, one of the team's best players just couldn't get going. John Gasaway of ESPN noted the struggles of Dawson, who didn't score until the 10:05 mark of the second half:

He eventually did end up with four points and two rebounds, but he still wasn't of much help despite coming into the day averaging almost a double-double.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin kept rolling along with a comfortable lead for the majority of the second half. ESPN's Dana O'Neil discussed the mindset of the top contenders:

A small run at the end of the game made it seem competitive, although the Badgers were in full control until the final whistle, leaving with a seven-point win.

While Kaminsky hogged the spotlight, the entire senior class at Wisconsin was able to celebrate an emotional day. Jesse Temple of Fox Sports broke down the impact of the quartet:

The team's Twitter account also provided a picture of the departing players with their families:

While the home fans won't be able to watch this group again in Madison, the Badgers do still have two important games remaining on the schedule. They play at Minnesota before closing the year with a road game at Ohio State. Each of these battles is certain to play a big part in the team's NCAA tournament seeding going forward.

Michigan State has to worry about seeding as well, although even gaining entry to the Big Dance isn't a certainty. The squad's final two games come against fellow bubble teams Purdue and Indiana and success or failure in these battles could end up deciding the Spartans' postseason fate.
