For the third time in his career, Michael Beasley will be joining the Miami Heat, as he signed with the team on Thursday.

The Heat's official Twitter account had the news:

Beasley, the No. 2 pick in the 2008 NBA draft, has never quite lived up to the expectations placed on him after his lone standout season at Kansas State, averaging 13.2 points and 4.9 rebounds per game in six NBA seasons with the Heat (2008-10 and 2013-14), Minnesota Timberwolves (2010-12) and Phoenix Suns (2012-13).

Beasley averaged 7.9 points and 3.1 rebounds in 15.1 minutes per game with the Heat last season.

With Chris Bosh out for the season, however, the Heat needed another scorer who could give them minutes in addition to crashing the boards. While Beasley isn't a direct replacement for Bosh from a positional or talent perspective, he'll be expected to compete for playing time and help fill the void left by Bosh's absence.

CBS Sports' James Herbert notes that Beasley found some success last season in Miami and could do so again:

"

While the former No. 2 overall pick still doesn't exactly have the best reputation, he wasn't as bad last season as you might think. He only made 55 appearances, but in his 15.1 minutes per game, he was more efficient than any other year in his career. Of course, that was on a superstar-laden team where he had no choice but to accept his role.

The way head coach Erik Spoelstra works, he'll still expect Beasley to take good shots, move the ball quickly and execute his defensive scheme. If the 26-year-old wants to stay in the league for good this time, he'll do that.

"

After all, maybe the third time really is the charm.
