Roy Jones Turns Back The Clock. Are You Watching, Anderson Silva?

Todd McIntyreAug 17, 2009

On Saturday night in Biloxi, Roy Jones Jr. showed flashes of his old self. At 40 years old, he shows no signs of stopping. He battled a very game Jeff Lacy pillar to post, before the fight was called off after the tenth round.

While Roy's foot speed may have diminished somewhat, there is still no question about his hand speed! Roy was almost partying like it was 1999, showing triple left hooks and tremendous reflexes.

Now, granted Jeff Lacy has been on a downslide since taking a hellacious beating from Joe Calzaghe in 2006, but still has a big punch, has never been stopped, and has an aggressive style that can still give anyone problems. He is certainly a big step up from the semi-retired Omar Sheika whom Jones stopped in the fifth round last March.

Were you watching, Anderson Silva? Bet you were.

As much distaste as I have for MMA, at least Dana White knows which side his bread is buttered on. He wouldn't allow Silva to fight RJJ in a proposed boxing match that Silva has hungered for, knowing that a totally schooled Silva would be a bad blow for his sport. Roy Jones Jr., even a 40 year old version, would have absolutely no problem whatsoever in blowing Silva away!

It seems Silva is totally obsessed with Roy Jones, more akin to hero worship than anything. He has stated before that Roy is his idol, but he better just stick to admiring him from a safe distance.

Immediately after Saturday night's card, Jones and under card victor Danny Green put into motion plans to fight in Green's native Australia for his cruiserweight title. RJJ says that a title at cruiser is the one piece of hardware missing from his Hall of Fame collection. He has garnered championship belts at middleweight, super-middleweight, light-heavyweight, but skipped over cruiserweight to get at John Ruiz for his WBA heavyweight strap in 2003.

Based on how Roy looked last Saturday night, Danny Green better be careful what he wishes for as well, because he just may get it.
