Predicting 5 Potential Shock Trades at 2026 NFL Trade Deadline

Alex KayOct 27, 2026

The 2026 NFL trade deadline could bring about some surprising deals that completely shift the league's landscape.

While pro football's trade deadline used to be relatively quiet compared to other sports, things have changed in recent years. The leadup to the 2025 deadline saw over a dozen deals go down, including several first-round picks and superstars changing hands.

Plenty more exciting trades could be in store with approximately a third of the league having two or fewer wins going into Week 8.

With that in mind, here's a look at five potential shock trades that could occur at the 2026 trade deadline.

Buffalo Bills Fix Secondary with Budda Baker

Buffalo Bills receive: S Budda Baker

Arizona Cardinals receive: 2027 third-round draft pick

The Bills made some sweeping changes this offseason after coming up painfully short of a Super Bowl yet again in the Josh Allen era. While many of these adjustments have been successful based on the team's hot start, the secondary has become a liability and could be an Achilles' heel if it isn't addressed at the trade deadline.

The Bills have jumped out to a 5-1 record despite a sieve-like pass defense that has allowed an eye-popping 285.8 yards per game. Only the Detroit Lions have given up more passing yardage in 2026. Buffalo also ranks 30th in scoring defense and has allowed 15 passing touchdowns, tied for the third-most in the league.

While the Bills reinforced the cornerback position by bringing Tre'Davious White back into the fold for the third time, adding a versatile safety like Budda Baker could be what leads this secondary back to respectability.

Baker has been languishing on a Cardinals team that has only reached the playoffs once during his nine-plus seasons with the club. The eight-time Pro Bowler has been one of the few consistent bright spots in recent years and remains a force despite Arizona's dismal 2-5 start to the 2026 campaign.

Although he's in an age-30 season, Baker still has plenty to offer a Super Bowl contender. In seven games this season, he's already recorded a career-best 3.5 sacks while also contributing 44 tackles, four pass defenses and an interception. He's also under contract through next season after agreeing to a three-year, $54 million extension in December 2024.

Given his versatility, high football IQ and ability to cover, support the run and attack the quarterback with equal skill, Baker would be the optimal defensive back for the Bills to make a run at leading up to the trade deadline. He can slot in at either safety position, instantly upgrading a Buffalo defense that sorely needs a playmaker of Baker's caliber.

Detroit Lions Address Secondary with Donte Jackson

Los Angeles Chargers receive: 2027 sixth-round draft pick

The Detroit Lions were expected to return to prominence after a disappointing 2025 season ended without a playoff berth, but the team is being plagued by many of the same issues in 2026.

One of the most glaring problems in the Motor City is the defense, specifically a passing defense that has given up a league-worst 291.8 yards per game and the second-most touchdowns through the air (16).

While Detroit is tied for the most sacks in the league with 21 and is getting reliable pressure thanks to Aidan Hutchinson and DJ Wonnum, the secondary has been a disaster. The cornerback room is desperate for an upgrade, one that will likely need to come via the trade market to have the type of impact required for real change.

Jackson should be available after the Chargers fell completely out of contention before the calendar flipped to November. Considering the team remains winless going into Week 8, it would be a surprise if the Bolts don't host a fire sale that sees several veterans on expiring contracts, including Jackson, shipped off for draft capital.

Although Jackson isn't a perennial Pro Bowler, he's the type of reliable, steady defensive back with nearly a decade of starting experience who could help transform a secondary. He's played in 116 games for three different franchises since entering the league as a second-round pick in the 2018 draft. He had one of his better coverage seasons in 2025—his first with the Chargers—allowing completions on just 21 of 49 targets for 287 yards and three touchdowns.

If Detroit does land Jackson, the corner profiles as a starter on the outside across from D.J. Reed. That upgrade could be all it takes to get this defense on the right track and have it playing far better in the second half of the campaign.

Minnesota Vikings Jump-Start the Offense with Saquon Barkley

Minnesota Vikings receive: RB Saquon Barkley

Philadelphia Eagles receive: 2027 third- and sixth-round draft picks

With the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers both faltering in Week 7, the Vikings stand alone as the NFL's last remaining undefeated team. It's apparent that this team has the potential to make a Super Bowl run, but the offense hasn't played nearly up to the level of excellence the team's defense has established.

One way to jump-start a unit that has been averaging a pitiful 281.7 yards per game (the fourth-fewest in football) is to acquire a game-changing running back. Saquon Barkley could be available for the right price after the Eagles dropped their fifth consecutive game on Monday night.

Barkley may not be the same player that rushed for over 2,000 yards and carried Philadelphia to a Lombardi Trophy two years ago, but he's still a highly effective, versatile lead back who would add a new dimension to an offense that has grown stagnant.

Despite missing two games with injury and playing behind a depleted offensive line that has lost multiple starters, Barkley has still managed to tally 244 rushing yards and a touchdown on 43 totes—averaging a strong 5.7 yards per carry. He hasn't been contributing much as a pass-catcher in 2026 (hauling in six of nine targets for 17 yards), but has proven in years past that he can easily impact a game as a receiver when called upon.

While Minnesota isn't desperate for running back help right now, it wouldn't be wise to count on a 31-year-old Aaron Jones to stay healthy on his current 300-plus carry pace. Backup Jordan Mason has already missed several games with injury and hasn't moved the needle much when he has been available.

Adding Barkley is the type of forward-thinking maneuver championship hopefuls make at the deadline. By the time he's up to speed and fully integrated into head coach Kevin O'Connell's system, he'll be ready to supercharge Minnesota's offense and shoulder a heavy load throughout a potential deep playoff run.

Garrett Wilson Revives Struggling San Francisco 49ers' Receiving Corps

San Francisco 49ers receive: WR Garrett Wilson

New York Jets receive: 2027 first- and fourth-round draft picks

The San Francisco 49ers remain a Super Bowl favorite despite their disappointing 29-20 defeat to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7. The team's first defeat of 2026 did highlight some roster inadequacies, though, with the most notable being at the wide receiver position.

San Francisco's receiving corps has dealt with a slew of injuries this year, with the issue coming to a head over the weekend when San Francisco was forced to rely on the likes of Jacob Cowing, Jordan Watkins and Brandin Cooks to serve as Brock Purdy's top receiving options.

Wilson would be a landscape-shifting acquisition, a star in his prime who could serve as San Francisco's top receiver not only for the remainder of the 2026 campaign but also the foreseeable future. He inked a four-year, $130 million extension in July 2025, a deal that will keep him under contract through the 2030 season.

While Wilson has struggled with consistency this year, he's still managed to reel in 37 of his 51 targets for 444 receiving yards and three touchdowns—keeping him on pace for his fourth 1,000-yard receiving campaign in his first five NFL seasons. He's accomplishing this despite being saddled with a low-end starting quarterback in Geno Smith and an offense that only averages a shade over 200 passing yards per game.

Wilson could be rejuvenated in the Bay Area, working with one of the league's top passers in Purdy. Mike Evans and Wilson would give San Francisco a truly elite receiving tandem to chase a ring with this year, while the latter could eventually take over as the club's main WR1 as the 33-year-old Evans approaches the latter stages of his career.

It won't be easy to pry Wilson away from Gang Green, but the recent rise of rookie Omar Cooper Jr. may help convince the 2-5 Jets to move on at the deadline in exchange for several premium picks.

Jonathan Taylor Bolsters Seattle Seahawks' Title Defense

Seattle Seahawks receive: RB Jonathan Taylor

Indianapolis Colts receive: RB Emmanuel Wilson, 2027 second- and fourth-round picks

The Seattle Seahawks' title defense hit a snag when the team lost three of four games between Weeks 3-6, but the squad started trending the right direction again with a big win over the previously undefeated Kansas City Chiefs this week.

Seattle still doesn't look like a strong candidate to join the Chiefs and New England Patriots as the only repeat champs since the turn of the millennium, however, and shouldn't hesitate to make a blockbuster move at the deadline to improve its odds.

Acquiring Jonathan Taylor would push Seattle's offense back to the league's upper echelon and allow the club to follow the same blueprint it did during last year's Lombardi Trophy run.

Seattle leaned heavily on Kenneth Walker III to carry the offense during the playoffs, but lost the Super Bowl MVP in free agency. The team attempted to draft a replacement in Jadarian Price, but thus far the first-round rookie has underwhelmed and dealt with significant injuries.

Emmanuel Wilson has helped plug the hole while Zach Charbonnet continues to work his way back from an ACL tear, but trading for Taylor would give the team an established lead back to run the offense around for the long haul.

Taylor has been one of the few effective players on a dismal Colts team. He's turned 140 totes into 587 rushing yards and a league-leading eight touchdowns while adding 178 receiving yards on 17 receptions. Despite his best efforts, Indy dropped to 2-5 this weekend and remains well out of contention.

Bringing Taylor into the mix would significantly elevate a Seahawks ground attack that is averaging a middling 113.7 yards per game right now. That is nearly 10 yards below what the team rushed for during the 2025 campaign and almost 20 yards fewer than it averaged during its three-game postseason run.

While the move would cost the Seahawks some premium picks, upgrading Wilson to Taylor would have a transformative effect—catapulting Seattle back near the top of the Super Bowl favorites list.
