Michael Vick: It's Time To Let the Past be the Past

Christopher Lane IIAug 16, 2009

After three years, many would have figured Michael Vick could return to the NFL with a buzz the size of Texas.

Unfortunately, he has become the center of attention, since the Philadelphia Eagles signed the troubled quarterback, and now that buzz is the size of the United States.

Most of this circus has been put on the back burner for the last three years, many waiting until the man himself returned from his prison sentence.

Everyone needs to realize right now: Enough is enough, let the man play the game he loves.

Most people would say that Vick has paid his debt to society, but never again will he walk free, because many writers, football fans, and animal lovers keep his mistakes fresh in their minds.

I am certainly not supporting his heinous actions of the past; in fact, I cannot point out a single person who would. However, it's time to let the past be the past and look forward to the future. In other words, what’s done is done; Vick seems to have learned from his actions, so why can't we just move on?

On his recent interview with 60 Minutes, Vick revealed that he cried many nights and days, while enduring his stint in prison.

After Vick told of his emotional times, it seemed as if America became dumbfounded a man could cry. Headlining many top notch sporting Web sites was, "Vick Cried in Prison" or something along those lines.

Emotions are what make us all human.

Yes, what Vick did was inhumane and sickening, but he is still a mere man at the end of the day. He has feelings, he has emotions, and I guarantee when that metal gate closed behind him years ago, he felt extremely scared and alone.

Vick was a pawn in the dog fighting culture. He surrounded himself with people that did not care about his well being or what kind of friend he was; they were content with dragging him down.

The saddest part was that Vick was blinded by all the attention and bought into this dark underworld.

With Vick's demise comes new life and a new opportunity for the once promising quarterback. He has been resurrected from public exile (a special thanks to Tony Dungy), and Vick has been given the opportunity he has been dreaming about since 2006.

Carrying his return is the growing support of his peers, coaches, and the NFL. His support continues to grow with the fans, as well.

After years of waiting, Vick has taken the field once again. Again, what’s done is done, and now there is no looking back.

Vick has expressed his sorrow for his past actions for the last three years. All we can do now is sit back, let the past be the past, and enjoy what Michael Vick does best on the field.

Entertain the fans.
