Jim Boeheim Comments on Syracuse Basketball in Wake of Postseason Ban

Tim KeeneyFeb 7, 2015

Some people don't like how Jim Boeheim is running the Syracuse basketball program, which is fresh off a self-imposed postseason ban.

And Boeheim could not care less.

Following his team's 83-77 loss against Pittsburgh on Saturday night, the 70-year-old head coach wasn't exactly in a good mood. When asked about his critics, he had a simple response, via Panther-Lair.com's Chris Peak:

"Jim Boeheim on whether people might think he runs a dirty program: 'I don't give a s--t what those people think.'"

Note to self: Don't ask Boeheim about how he runs his program.

Syracuse's postseason ban came as a response to an ongoing NCAA investigation. It's unclear what the investigation focuses on exactly, but ESPN.com's Brett McMurphy reported in October, it involves the basketball and football teams, and it has to do with improper benefits and academic issues.

One of the main criticisms on the ban was the timing. Syracuse looks like a long shot to make the NCAA tournament, and many saw it as essentially cheating the system—taking the ban in the midst of a down year, hoping to avoid any penalty when the team is likely better in 2015-16. Mike DeCourcy of Sporting News gave his take on the controversial matter:

"

What Syracuse has done here is a disgrace that rises to the highest level of all that is untoward in college athletics. And the worst part: It is done under the guise of what is right and just. Once again in NCAA justice, we have a punishment that does not so much fit the crime as compound it. The punishment itself is one more egregious abuse of the system.

"

While Boeheim may not care what the critics say, he is certainly facing some of the most intense pressure of his highly successful career.

Boeheim is going to keep coaching, keep doing his job and keep blocking out the background noise, but this controversy isn't going away anytime soon.
