Kyle Collinsworth Breaks NCAA Record with 5th Triple-Double of the Season

It was another typical Saturday for BYU guard Kyle Collinsworth, who tallied 23 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists against Loyola Marymount to give him an NCAA-record five triple-doubles on the season. 

BYU and ESPN Stats & Info had the news: 

Collinsworth, a junior from Provo, Utah, is now just two triple-doubles behind the rest of the country combined. It certainly helps that the Cougars play at a breakneck speed (seventh in the country in adjusted tempo, per Ken Pomeroy), allowing him to fill the stat sheet. But this accomplishment shouldn't be overlooked. 

BYUtv's Jarom Jordan put it simply:

While teammate Tyler Haws may get more national attention for his ability to score in bunches, Collinsworth is an unbelievably versatile weapon, and this record is a testament to that. He is 6'5" with point guard skills and an innate nose for the ball. Entering Saturday, he was averaging 12.6 points, 8.3 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 2.0 steals per contest. 

"It’s such a luxury to play with a player who does so much—his great vision, rebounding and scoring," teammate Chase Fischer said in January, via the Deseret News' Jeff Call. "He does it all. He’s a really great player." 

According to SB Nation's Steve Pierce, the NCAA record for triple-doubles in a career is held by Michael Anderson and Shaquille O'Neal with six. It's safe to say that record is danger, as Collinsworth still likely has more than a year left in his career. 

BYU is just 8-5 in the WCC, and he'd likely trade the stats for some more wins. But either way, he has etched his name in NCAA history with a record not likely to be touched for a very long time.
