The Ascension Have Regressed Since Move to WWE Roster

The Doctor Chris MuellerFeb 1, 2015

The Ascension picked up their biggest win to date at the Royal Rumble by defeating The New Age Outlaws, but the victory didn't help change anyone's perception of Konnor and Viktor.

Ever since they debuted, they have been bashing legendary tag teams and facing wrestlers who are smaller than Daniel Bryan and less threatening than Eva Marie.

For anyone who watched the demonic duo in NXT, this is disappointing. Not only have they not improved since their move to the main roster, but they have actually taken a few steps back.

In NXT, The Ascension ran that tag team division for almost a year. They didn't have a lot of competition, but anyone who challenged them ended up leaving with a few bruises and a loss on their record.

All you ever heard anyone talking about was how good they were and what kind of impact they would make on the tag team division once they were called up. These two men seemed like the answer to WWE's issue with depth in the division.

Unfortunately, they have not lived up to those expectations. Some of the blame can be put on management for not giving them any real competition and having them speak the same promo every week, but Konnor and Viktor are responsible for their own delivery.

Instead of acting like a knockoff of The Road Warriors and Demolition, Konnor and Viktor should be carving out their own path. You can be an imposing team without ripping off legends from the past. They even use the same colors as Hawk and Animal.

We saw a bit of improvement last week when they defeated Gold and Stardust, but it didn't seem like the crowd cared because nobody knew who to root for in a match involving two heel teams.

The Ascension should be wrestling other Superstars who can put on a good match and make them look good in the process.

In NXT, they proved they were more than just a couple of powerhouses. They showed real skill in the ring and had a connection with the crowd that they have yet to achieve on the main roster.

Unfortunately, there are only a few teams in WWE who could be the babyfaces to The Ascension's heel personas. The Usos and Los Matadores are basically it.

They won't wrestle The Miz and Damien Mizdow or Cesaro and Tyson Kidd because heel vs. heel matches don't happen all that often, and when they do, there's a reason behind it.

Besides some new competition, what Konnor and Viktor need is someone to speak for them. Paul Ellering was instrumental during The Road Warriors' career. The Ascension need someone who can do for them what Ellering did for Hawk and Animal.

A few weeks ago, I wrote an article about how The Ascension need a manager. They seem to need it now more than ever.

Paul Heyman is probably the first name that will come to many people's mind, but he might not be the best option for them. What they need is someone who can match their intensity but still sound coherent.

Just because they have muscles and an intimidating demeanor does not mean they are safe from being buried. It's happened to countless tag teams before them, and unless they are given a chance to show what they can do against an established team, they will suffer the same fate.

Hopefully, The Ascension finds their groove and starts making a better impression soon because they already proved they have what it takes in NXT.

What do you think? How can WWE salvage The Ascension? Were they called up too soon? Who would be a good manager for the promising duo?
