Wisconsin vs. Michigan: Score and Twitter Reaction from 2015 Regular Season

R. Cory SmithJan 24, 2015

Michigan put up a great fight against No. 6 Wisconsin, but the Badgers still went into Ann Arbor and came away with a 69-64 overtime win. The victory keeps Wisconsin at the top of the Big Ten at 18-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play.

Wisconsin basketball's official Twitter account provides a look at the final score from Michigan:

The Badgers were paced by Frank Kaminsky and Sam Dekker, who combined for 37 points and 13 rebounds. Along with the two dominant big men, Bronson Koenig tallied 13 points to go along with four assists.

Winning on the road is nothing new for the Badgers under head coach Bo Ryan, as ESPN College Basketball points out:

Despite the great scoring from Wisconsin, Michigan still hung around throughout the game with gritty play by several players off the bench. Derrick Walton Jr. led the Wolverines in scoring with 17 points, but the bench outscored the Badgers reserves 26-0.

When it came time for the Badgers to slowly pull away and clinch the victory in overtime, they relied solely on the starting five to get the job done. Senior guard Josh Gasser spoke about the team's strengths heading into the matchup, via Jeff Potrykus of the Journal Sentinel:

"

We have the pieces — our size, our length, our ability to move our feet. And we're experienced. We know what we're trying to do. We know what Coach Ryan expects out of us.

It is just about buckling down and focusing on every position on the defensive end. That is what really makes great teams.

"

However, one of their biggest strengths was an issue early on. The Badgers are one of the best teams in the country when it comes to ball security, but they turned the ball over six times in the first half.

Michigan basketball's official Twitter account notes how rare the turnovers were for Wisconsin:

Due to the issues with maintaining possession, the Wolverines kept the game close and were down just 30-23 at the half. Michigan had a closer margin, but Dekker finished off the first half emphatically with a massive dunk.

Zach Heilprin of ESPN Wisconsin passed along a Vine of the slam:

The dunk caused an injury to Dekker's hand, as Stephen Watson of WISN notes:

Dekker would return in the second half with even more production, and the turnover woes seemed to be corrected. Even with those factors improving for Wisconsin, Michigan wouldn't go away quietly.

The Wolverines allowed the Badgers to build a considerable lead at the start of the second half but slowly clawed their way back in. A late run was thanks in large part to creating second-chance opportunities, something Wisconsin rarely allows opponents to do.

ESPN Stats & Info pointed out a staggering statistic about the Wolverines' play:

The run by Michigan eventually led to the game going into overtime on a huge shot from Walton Jr. Jeff Goodman of ESPN offered his take on the surprising close to regulation for the Wolverines:

In its second game since losing Caris LeVert for the season to a foot injury, Michigan has played well without one of its biggest stars. Though some might have counted the Wolverines out in the Big Ten following the injury, they more than proved there is a lot of fight left within the program.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin still looks like the team to beat in the conference but has been tested several times now. After bashing No. 25 Iowa by 32 points at home earlier this week, the Hawkeyes will get another crack next Saturday with Wiscy coming off the nail-biting win.
