Villanova vs. Georgetown: Score, Twitter Reaction for Hoyas' Upset Win

Tim KeeneyJan 19, 2015

Georgetown must have been tired of playing close games.

After their last four contests were decided by a combined 17 points, the Hoyas welcomed No. 4 Villanova to the Verizon Center with a 78-58 blowout victory on Monday night, handing the Wildcats just their second loss of the season.

D1scourse.com's Patrick Stevens illustrated the rarity of the result:

Six players scored at least eight points for John Thompson III's squad, led by Isaac Copeland's 17 off the bench. The Hoyas shot a scorching 53.5 percent from the field, running out to a 22-point lead at halftime and holding off a late run from the Wildcats.

As the New York Post's Zach Braziller noted, the result creates a logjam at the top of the Big East standings:

The Hoyas aren't the most exciting team in the nation, but they are efficient on offense (third in the conference in points per possession, via StatSheet.com), they crash the offensive glass and they start three seniors and one junior. Four of their five losses on the season have been very close, and Thompson seems ready to return them to the Big Dance after missing out last year.

And as CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein pointed out, they feature their typical disruptive length on the defensive side of the ball, which was key during Monday's huge victory:

As for the Cats, this just wasn't their night. ESPN's Eamonn Brennan put it simply after they were terrible on both sides of the ball in the first half:

They woke up with an offensive surge in the second half but still shot just 33.3 percent from the field, sloppily turning the ball over 17 times compared to just six assists. The fact they were able to cut the deficit to 12 after trailing by as many as 26 is a testament to this team's toughness and perseverance, but the Cats dug themselves too big of a hole.

For Wildcats fans, this one will be a little reminiscent of last year's late-season blowout loss against Creighton, as CBS Sports' Matt Norlander noted:

After that one, Villanova responded with six straight wins to capture the Big East. Don't be surprised if Jay Wright's squad bounces back in a similar manner this time around.

This is a definite blow to the Wildcats' chances of earning a No. 1 seed in March, but it's only a minor slip-up in what has been a tremendous season. These kinds of nights happen to everyone during a long season, and this team remains one of the best in the country.
