Brandan Wright to Suns: Latest Trade Details, Comments and Reaction
Brandan Wright better not have gotten too comfortable in Boston. Less than a month after the Celtics acquired the veteran forward from Dallas in the Rajon Rondo trade, the team is moving him on to the Phoenix Suns.
"The Boston Celtics announced today that they have acquired a future conditional Minnesota first-round pick and a trade exception from the Phoenix Suns in exchange for forward/center Brandan Wright," the team stated on its website.
Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski first reported the deal.
Wojnarowski also provided more detail on the pick:
NBA insider David Aldridge provided the protections regarding the pick:
It always seemed likely that Wright would be traded again before the Feb. 19 deadline. He's an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, and with Boston in rebuilding mode, the team is better off dealing Wright now than letting him leave in the offseason for nothing.
Between his time with the Celtics and Dallas Mavericks, the 27-year-old is averaging 7.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.3 blocks a game. His presence inside will be a big help for the Suns as they try to toughen up defensively.
Grantland's Zach Lowe is a fan of the deal from Phoenix's perspective, especially if the pick morphs into two second-rounders:
Kyle McKeown of RotoWire.com ventures that Wright will come off the bench, just as he has for much of his career:
This trade seems to benefit both teams. The Celtics get a pick or picks to help build for the future while Phoenix adds some depth to its bench.
Wright doesn't need to play out of his mind in the coming months, but the Suns will certainly need him to produce if they're to hold off the Oklahoma City Thunder for the eighth seed in the Western Conference or jump one of the teams ahead of them in the standings.
