5-Star Recruit Accidentally Says 'Kentucky' While Committing to Kansas

Dan CarsonJan 8, 2015

We've all had our slips of the tongue.

You accidentally call your girlfriend “mom.” You meant to tell your in-laws “merry Christmas” but shouted, “Jet fuel doesn’t burn hot enough to melt steel!” instead.

These things happen, particularly under stressful circumstances, which is why Carlton Bragg deserves a pass for a mistake he made while committing to play basketball for the University of Kansas on Thursday afternoon.

A 5-star power forward recruit out of Cleveland, Ohio, Bragg has spent the last year or so whittling down a long list of suitors vying to land his talents. The 6’8” Villa Angela-St. Joseph star’s decision came down to two blue bloods, Kansas and Kentucky, and decided to choose the former in a televised press conference Thursday inside his high school gym.

Kentucky Sports Radio’s Drew Franklin uploaded a Vine of Bragg's announcement. He looked good. He smiled bravely. And he accidentally committed to Kentucky.

“This year I’ll be playing for the University of Kentucky,” Bragg said, putting on a Kansas hat.

He quickly realized his mistake and took a moment to compose himself.

“Kansas! I’m sorry,” Bragg said, smiling.

Franklin astutely points out that Bragg's classmates probably knew this was a gaffe:

Welp. These things happen, Carlton, and you’ll have forgotten all about this by the time you see your potential future digs in Lawrence. And let’s face it, Kansas...Kentucky. They’re far from the same, but they’re both 5-star watering holes lorded over by slick-talking men with great hair.

And they both start with “K”!
