Oklahoma vs. Texas: Score and Twitter Reaction from 2015 Regular Season

Rob GoldbergJan 5, 2015

Oklahoma made a statement to the rest of the Big 12 with a 70-49 road win over Texas.

Defense was the story of this one as the Longhorns only managed to shoot 30 percent from the floor, including 6-of-21 from three-point range. Javan Felix was a rare bright spot with 13 points as the only one on his team in double figures.

Meanwhile, the Sooners showcased a balanced effort with six players scoring between nine and 13 points. Buddy Hield led the way with 13 points and seven rebounds while TaShawn Thomas was a force inside with 12 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.

Texas took a 3-2 lead in the opening minutes, but that was the last highlight of the night as Oklahoma just smothered its opponent on the defensive end of the court.

Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports liked what he saw from the road team:

Joey Helmer of 247 Sports noted that the physicality was a major difference in the early going:

The Longhorns couldn't get points in the paint like they usually do, and things weren't falling from the perimeter, either. Chris Hummer of 247 Sports broke down the miserable offensive effort:

On the other end of the court, the Sooners were doing just enough to pull away in the first half. CBS Sports' Doug Gottlieb wasn't the only one confused by the home team's poor effort:

Brad Evans of Yahoo Sports broke down Oklahoma path to success:

The squad went into halftime with a 33-14 lead as Texas was held to by far its lowest scoring half of the year. Not a single player on the roster had more than three points heading into intermission.

It was not much better in the second half for the Longhorns as they continued to struggle on both ends of the court.

Thomas provided the biggest highlight of the second half with a posterizing dunk that made the bench go wild:

Even the Oklahoma Twitter account could not contain its excitement:

This helped keep the home fans quiet and the players on the court dejected as the rout continued.

Texas cut the lead to 62-42 with four minutes remaining, but it was way too little, way too late for a team with serious Final Four aspirations this season.

Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports took note of the surprising final result:

This game continues to show how difficult the Big 12 will be this season. These were two of the five teams are currently ranked in the AP Top 25 with a few more capable of at least contending for a spot in the NCAA tournament.

"The level of play is so high in the Big 12 right now that if you don't get better and you are trying to get in that top division it's not going to be easy," Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger told Eric Prisbell of USA Today. "There are going to be good teams that aren't going to be in the top division."

Things do not get much easier for Texas, which has to go on the road Saturday to face Oklahoma State. Oklahoma has a more favorable matchup at home against Kansas State, also on Saturday.

With the race for the Big 12 title likely going down to the wire, both squads will want to do whatever it takes to come away with wins.
