The 2014-15 College Basketball Season By the Numbers So Far

Kerry MillerJan 1, 2015

It may be a new calendar year, but there have already been seven full weeks of nonconference college basketball numbers to digest.

No need to fear, though. We've sifted through the more than 2,000 games that have been played to come up with the 33 numbers that you need to know before diving headlong into conference play.

We promise, most of them aren't anywhere nearly as depressing as the first one.

Points per game this season, according to StatSheet.comdown pretty considerably from 141.3 last season. Good luck finding reliable data on offensive fouls, but it certainly feels like a drastic uptick in charges called is a big contributing factor to that decrease.

Also, elite teams like Kentucky, Virginia, Wisconsin, Louisville and Arizona have made defense their calling card.

Minimum number of steals in each game this season by West Virginia. The Mountaineers are leading the nation in turnover percentage and steal percentage and have also done an incredible job of crashing the offensive glass. Their 12-1 record is no accident.

Teams that still do not have wins against Division I opponents. The full list, in alphabetical order: Alabama A&M, Alcorn State, Binghamton, Central Arkansas, Coppin State, Florida A&M, Grambling State, Nicholls State, North Carolina A&T, Presbyterian, San Jose State, South Alabama and Southern.

Not only have Alcorn State and Binghamton failed to beat D-I teams, but they each have one loss to a D-II school. Grambling State has lost each game it has played against a D-I opponent by at least 25 points. As an entire conference, the SWAC is 12-98 vs. D-I teams, but that does include Texas Southern's wins over Michigan State and Kansas State.

Points per game averaged by the nation's leading scorer, Northwestern State's Zeek Woodley. Woodley has scored at least 20 points in nine straight games.

Not so coincidentally, Woodley's teammate Jalan West is leading the nation in assists with 8.5 per game. He has at least six dimes in all 11 games this season.

Points per game averaged by Cincinnati's leading scorer, Octavius Ellis. The Bearcats play at a snail's pace and focus most of their energy on defense, but it's hard to believe that they don't have a single player scoring in double figures.

Minutes per game averaged by Willie Cauley-Steinthe highest mark for any Kentucky player.

John Calipari's platoon system has been one of the most discussed things in the country this season. It's working well, and he's sticking with it despite the loss of Alex Poythress to a torn ACL.

Nov 21, 2014; Lexington, KY, USA; Kentucky Wildcats guard Aaron Harrison (2) and guard Devin Booker (1) celebrate during the game against the Boston University Terriers in the second half at Rupp Arena. Kentucky defeated Boston University 89-65. Mandatory

Three-point shooting percentage by Kentucky's freshman guards Tyler Ulis and Devin Booker.

Three-point shooting percentage by all of Kentucky's other players. Aaron Harrison must be saving his bullets for the tournament, because he's shooting just 27.3 percent. Trey Lyles is just 3-of-21.

0 (Part 1)

SEC teams other than Kentucky which can safely book a ticket to the NCAA tournament. That even includes Florida now that the Gators have five losses and no quality wins. At least two or three other SEC teams will get in, but your guess is as good as ours as to who those teams will be.

0 (Part 2)

Losses suffered by TCU. The Horned Frogs haven't played anybody worth mentioning, but they are nevertheless one of the six undefeated teams at the start of 2015.

Big 12 teams ranked among the AP's 26 best. Looks like the SEC picked the wrong teams when it pilfered Missouri and Texas A&M from the Big 12 three years ago.

Nov 14, 2014; Storrs, CT, USA; Connecticut Huskies head coach Kevin Ollie talks with guard/forward Daniel Hamilton (5) after a play against the Bryant University Bulldogs in the second half at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. UConn defeated Bryant 66-53. Mandato

Losses suffered by each of Florida, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska and reigning national champs Connecticut after they all opened the season ranked in the AP Top 25 poll. Outside of the truly elite, no one has been safe this season.

Consecutive losses suffered by New Jersey Institute of Technology during the 2006-08 seasons. There have been a lot of shocking upsets this season, but Michigan losing a home game to the Highlanders still stands as the most dumbfounding of them all.

Double-doubles recorded by Stony Brook's Jameel Warney. He "only" had 15 points and eight rebounds in the recent win over Washington that stands as the biggest upset in Seawolves history.

Triple-doubles recorded by BYU's Kyle Collinsworth. Those stat-stuffers didn't come against No Name State and Anonymous A&M, either. Less than 10 months removed from surgery to repair a torn ACL, Collinsworth has posted triple-doubles against Hawaii and Gonzaga.

Points in Tyler Haws' career with BYU. He won't catch Doug McDermott (3,150), but he has a pretty good shot at finishing his career among the top 25 of all time. He would need a total of 2,662 points for that honor.

Points until D'Angelo Harrison reaches the 2,000-point plateau in his career with St. John's. The Red Storm had a tough loss at Seton Hall on New Year's Eve, but Harrison did what he could with 25 points.

He and several other seniors on the roster are looking for their first ever trip to the NCAA tournament.

Percentage of opponents' two-point attempts blocked by Washington's Robert Upshaw. Not only is it the highest rate in the country by a significant margin, but he's looking to become the first player since 2010-11 to finish a season with a percentage better than 16.14. He has been a huge difference-maker for the Huskies.

Percentage of opponents' possessions ending in a steal by VCU's Briante Weber. He has led the nation in steal percentage in each of the past three seasons, but this is ridiculous even for him. Second place on the list for this season is 6.27 percent, meaning Weber has been 42.4 percent better than the rest of the country.

Notre Dame's two-point field-goal percentage. The Fighting Irish have played a lot of games against not-very-good teams, but there are 68 teams with team free-throw percentages worse than Notre Dame's two-point percentage.

That's just silly.

Percentage of D-I schools from Iowa that will probably make the NCAA tournament. Iowa State is a legitimate threat to make the Final Four. Iowa is looking like one of the better teams in a weak Big Ten. And whether or not Northern Iowa is better than Wichita State, the Panthers should at least earn an at-large bid out of the Missouri Valley conference.

Sorry, Drake. You're the odd team out.

Teams from the Atlantic-10 in the RPI Top 60the same number as the ACC and twice as many as the Big Ten. Maybe this conference is headed for four or five bids after all?

Teams from Conference USA with a legitimate chance to make the tournament. Old Dominion has been fantastic, but don't sleep on Louisiana Tech or UTEP in a season where it might be very difficult to find 37 deserving at-large teams.

That's enough jumping around. Here's one key number to know for each team in the AP Top 10.

10. Utah: 37.2

Two-point field-goal percentage allowed on defense by No. 10 Utah. Last year, the Utes couldn't defend anyone, allowing opponents to sink 46.7 percent of two-point field goals.

This year, with Jakob Poeltl anchoring the defense in the paint, they rank sixth in the nation in that category.

9. Iowa State: 1.75

Assists per turnover committed by No. 9 Iowa Statethe best ratio in the country. For a second straight season, Monte Morris has been incredible at point guard for the Cyclones. His personal ratio is 6.1, as he has 61 assists against just 10 turnovers.

8. Arizona: 64.9

Free-throw percentage that No. 8 Arizona is shooting as a team. The Wildcats have played a lot of close games this season, and poor free-throw shooting is partially to blame for their loss to UNLV. They missed 11 freebies in the four-point loss. They shot just 59.0 percent from the charity stripe in December.

Gabe York (77.4 percent) is leading the team, but he is taking the fewest free throws of any starter. No one else is shooting better than 68.3 percent.

It's certainly something to monitor as the season progresses and something to consider when filling out your bracket in March.

7. Gonzaga: 69.5

Percent of field goals that Kyle Wiltjer is attempting from two-point range for No. 7 Gonzaga. Wiltjer has exceptional range and is shooting 43.1 percent from downtown, but he has developed into more of a post player with the Bulldogs. In his last season with Kentucky, just 46.0 percent of his field-goal attempts came from inside the arc.

6. Villanova: 9

Wins against RPI Top 150 opponents by No. 6 Villanova en route to a 13-0 start to the season. The Wildcats are tied with the Kentucky Wildcats for the most victories by an undefeated team. Six of those nine wins came against the RPI Top 80. Five of those six wins were by a double-digit margin.

There don't seem to be very many people marveling at Villanova's start to the season, but this is a very good team playing a much more difficult schedule than TCU or Colorado State.

5. Louisville: 8 or Better

Louisville's national rank in adjusted defensive efficiency (No. 2), steal percentage (No. 4), block percentage (No. 5), turnover percentage (No. 5), defensive-effective field-goal percentage (No. 6) and two-point field-goal defense (No. 8).

Kentucky and Virginia get all the publicity for having great defenses, but the Cardinals can shut down opponents with the best of them.

4. Wisconsin: 1

National rank in defensive rebounding percentage, defensive assist percentage and offensive block percentage by No. 4 Wisconsin. The Badgers are also one-tenth of a percentage point behind Cal Poly for lowest turnover percentage in the country.

Has Bo Ryan legally changed his middle name to "Fundamentals" yet?

3. Virginia: 49

Margin of victory when No. 3 Virginia hosted Harvard two weeks ago. Despite playing at a slow tempo, Virginia is efficient enough on both ends of the court to destroy any opponent having a less-than-stellar shooting day.

2. Duke: 5

Wins by No. 2 Duke until Mike Krzyzewski reaches 1,000 in his illustrious career. Not too shabby.

1. Kentucky: 27

Games standing between Kentucky and a perfect season. If you think there's a lot of 40-0 talk now, just wait until the Wildcats get into early February without even being challenged again.
