Eagles, Panthers Super Bowl Hopes Go Down The Drain In Training Camp

Walker DanielsAug 6, 2009

The Philadelphia Eagles and Carolina Panthers Super Bowl odds have taken a hit. Their dreams of being the next NFC team to win the NFL Championship have already been dashed, as premature as that sounds.

The Eagles, who lost their defensive coordinator Jim Johnson this offseason, also had a couple of injury-losses that will hurt their team.

The loss of middle linebacker Stewart Bradley cannot be underrated. Not many team can lose their leading tackler and take it in stride. Furthermore, if there is one position that the Eagles don't have much depth, it is at the linebacker position.

In total, losing Johnson, Bradley and Brian Dawkins to free agency and trading Lito Sheppard, the Eagles have subtracted quite a bit off of their defense.

In Carolina, the situation is somewhat similar as the Panthers lost a key contributor. While many betting fans won't really know the name Maake Kemoeatu, the hardcore football fans know that this is not just a minor injury.

Kemoeatu is the Panthers biggest run stuffer and he's the guy that keeps their undersized-yet-fast linebacking corps clean of offensive linemen.

The Panthers don't have any depth at defensive tackle, which is a big problem. After Kemoeatu was carted off, an undrafted free agent took snaps with the first team.

While these may be underrated losses, you can't help but figure these losses will hurt the respective teams at some point in the season. Many teams need luck, health and all the bounces to win the Super Bowl and these two teams are not off to the right start.
