Broncos vs. Bengals: Score and Twitter Reaction from Monday Night Football

Tim KeeneyDec 22, 2014

For the fourth consecutive season, the Cincinnati Bengals are heading to the playoffs.

Cincinnati let a 13-point first-half lead against the Denver Broncos slip away Monday night but got three fourth-quarter interceptions, including a pick-six from Dre Kirkpatrick, to earn a crucial 37-28 win at home.

Rookie running back Jeremy Hill led an effective ground attack with 147 yards and one sensational touchdown run, the defense picked off Peyton Manning four times and the Bengals clinched at least a wild-card berth with the win.

NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal noted the importance of defense and special teams for Marvin Lewis' squad:

The outcome is also good news for the New England Patriots, per ESPN's Adam Schefter, as they clinched home-field advantage with the Denver loss:

Manning finished with 311 yards and two touchdowns, but the Broncos' offense struggled to string together long drives outside of a 21-point third quarter. And with the rain pouring down, the future Hall of Famer completely fell apart in an ugly final quarter.

Cornerback Aqib Talib got the scoring started for Denver with a spectacular diving interception and 33-yard touchdown return, but it took just 23 seconds for the Bengals to respond.

On the very next play from scrimmage, Hill took a handoff to the right, broke a tackle from rookie Todd Davis in the backfield and accelerated up the field for a scintillating 85-yard run to the house. As Around The NFL noted, it was a rare feat against Denver's stingy run defense:

Cincinnati continued to move the ball mostly on the ground, while the defense held an out-of-rhythm Broncos offense to four punts and one interception, resulting in a 20-7 Bengals advantage at halftime.

But in the third quarter, the Broncos offense caught fire, scoring touchdowns on its first three possessions to take a 28-27 lead.

Omar Bolden's 77-yard kickoff return set up a one-yard touchdown from C.J. Anderson for the first of those three scores, then Manning took over. NFL Philosophy on Twitter spotted a change in the Bengals' defense:

Manning did most of his work with Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas. The former made an unbelievable one-handed grab down the sideline and finished off the two other scoring drives with short touchdown grabs, while Thomas' quickness and route-running couldn't be covered in the middle of the field.

Broncos vice president of public relations Patrick Smyth pointed out a new record for the Broncos' star:

The Bengals didn't fold, though. A big Brandon Tate punt return set up a go-ahead chip-shot for kicker Mike Nugent, and with under three minutes remaining, Manning had a miscommunication with Thomas that led to Kirkpatrick's pick-six, making it 37-28 Cincinnati.

Manning commented on the play via Jeff Legwold of ESPN.com:

Sports Illustrated's Doug Farrar pointed to Manning's lack of velocity, an increasingly concerning problem for him, that was evident all night:

Kirkpatrick added another interception inside Denver's red zone just for good measure, sealing the victory.

The Broncos still have a good chance to earn the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye, but they must beat the Oakland Raiders in Week 17.

If they are going to make another deep postseason run, though, they will need Manning to break out of his recent funk.

As for the Bengals, a Week 17 date in Pittsburgh against the Steelers will decide the AFC North title, but with this performance, they look intent on passing the wild-card round for the first time since 1990.
