MLB Trade Rumors: Latest Rumors Surrounding Atlanta Braves and Matt Kemp Deal

R. Cory SmithDec 17, 2014

Still months away from the start of the MLB season, teams are looking to make huge deals ahead of spring training. A myriad of stars have been moved already, so no players are safe this offseason.

Following the winter meetings, Matt Kemp was one of the biggest deals that took place. However, the move might have hit a hiccup due to questions about a physical.

One of the most active teams this offseason has been the Atlanta Braves. The franchise hasn't made a lot of big moves, but there are discussions surrounding some of the biggest stars in Hotlanta.

Here's a look at some of the latest rumors around the MLB.

Atlanta Braves

Oh, the NL East. It's been a wild ride this offseason with the Miami Marlins looking to make a run and the Atlanta Braves slowly looking to rebuild. If that sounds strange, that's because it is.

Jason Heyward is already with the St. Louis Cardinals and has been replaced by Nick Markakis. Now, two other big bats—and another disappointing one—might be on the market, via Mark Bowman of MLB.com:

At this point, the rumors flying around the Braves are getting a bit redundant. But if Atlanta can find a way to package B.J. Upton in a trade with any of the above names, Braves fans would be dancing in the streets.

Since joining the Braves prior to 2013, Upton has been atrocious offensively, hitting .198/.279/.314 over the last two seasons. Both years would have been career lows from his days with the Tampa Bay Rays, but they just seem normal at this point.

While moving Justin Upton seems slightly easier, the options also appear more limited now. Bob Nightengale of USA Today provides some more background on the possible suitors:

On Wednesday night, Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times reported a deal has already been made for Wil Myers to, you guessed it, the San Diego Padres. But as Bowman notes, there might be other options to look at with a wide-open market on Justin Upton.

Given the way things have shaped up to this point, the Braves might be better off holding onto the Uptons and Evan Gattis. Atlanta might never get out from under B.J. Upton's contract, but it can play this season out and look to move any of these players prior to the trade deadline.

Matt Kemp

When word was passed down about Kemp being moved to the Padres, it appeared San Diego might finally be involved in a blockbuster deal. Unfortunately, there are still questions as to whether or not the deal will be finalized.

There are differing reports, but Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports offers one side of the story:

So there's a lot on the table at this point for the Padres. The obvious hope would be that the deal goes through, but reworking the deal or looking at other targets also seem likely for San Diego at this point.

Meanwhile, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times provides what he has heard about the situation:

Just when Padres fans had something to get excited over, the rug appears to be pulled out from underneath. But if what Shaikin is reporting is true, they have no need to worry about the superstar.

As previously mentioned, the Braves might be monitoring the situation closely along with several other franchises. If the Kemp deal ultimately does fall through, San Diego has come too far with the Myers trade to turn around now.
