NFL Quarterback Power Rankings, Post-Week 15
Just like the NFL’s regular season is nearing an end, so too is the quarterback power rankings. Several household names are holding firm to the top of the list and are proving that even though the NFL may seem chaotic on a weekly basis, trustworthy themes do emerge over time.
Drew Brees may be an old man for the NFL, but right now he’s playing like a veteran trapped in a youngster’s body. This has been quite a year for NFL quarterbacks so far. Seventeen QBs have already thrown for more than 3,000 yards. Thirteen QBs have already thrown for more than 20 TD passes.
One theme that seems to be emerging in the power rankings is that it takes a lot of experience before a quarterback can become one of the best in the league.
Methodology
1 of 34
These rankings factor in several major attributes for the quarterback position.
Personal observation and opinion play a key role. A general section for film-review grades forms a foundation, but the output of these quarterbacks' most recent performances is what really sends them flying up and down the rankings each week.
Wins also give quarterbacks a slight boost in addition to their individual performances. The statistics used to help determine the ranking system are pulled from ESPN.com, NFL.com and Pro Football Focus (subscription required), unless stated otherwise.
Stats that are factored in include passer rating, completion percentage, yards per pass, rushing yards per game, touchdown-to-interception ratio, fumbles lost and wins.
As the season moves on, the weighted influence from last year's output will be reduced by 25 percent each week.
When more than one quarterback plays for a team in one game, the quarterback with the most passing attempts is featured.
Note: Total QBR is a scoring system that assesses everything a quarterback does on the field. It is explained further on ESPN.com.
Also, Pro Football Focus grades every single play of the season to generate a cumulative point total, which weighs into the metric as well.

32. Blake Bortles, Jacksonville Jaguars
3 of 34
This Week
When Bortles and the Jaguars faced the Baltimore Ravens, the main concern was Baltimore’s formidable pass rush against a struggling offensive line.
Bortles came out focused, moving the Jaguars' offense effectively down the field for four first-half field goals. He ended up getting plummeted the rest of the way behind an offensive line made of straw. He was sacked eight times in the team's Week 15 loss.

Blake Bortles has been put through a true trial-by-fire scenario in his first year with the Jaguars. It certainly hasn’t been pretty, but we have seen flashes of athleticism, accuracy and arm strength.
Ill-advised turnovers and rookie decisions have hampered his ability to climb up the power rankings. It has also contributed to him being sacked 46 times in just 10 games.

Next Week's Outlook
Bortles is dealing with a mid-foot sprain and is questionable for the team's Week 16 matchup with the Titans on Thursday night, according to Ryan O’Halloran of The Florida Times-Union. If he doesn't play, Chad Henne should be his replacement.
The game is more or less a meaningless matchup for anyone with fantasy football implications.
31. Johnny Manziel, Cleveland Browns
4 of 34
This Week
Hoyer failed to do enough to help the Browns win down the stretch, so they turned to Johnny Manziel. In Week 15, the Browns had a rematch against a Bengals defense that Ben Roethlisberger and Le'Veon Bell took apart a week earlier. The last time these two teams met, the Browns won 24-3 and Hoyer was the QB.
Browns QB Johnny Manziel had a Total QBR of 1.0 on Sunday. It’s safe to say his NFL debut was an enormous letdown, providing ample fuel for the legions of Manziel haters out there. The Bengals piled up three sacks and another six hits on the rookie QB, taking advantage of his tendency to hold the ball too long.

According to Coley Harvey of ESPN.com, the Bengals prevented Manziel from scrambling to his left. This could be the game plan for the Panthers in Week 16. They have a formidable front seven.
30. Tom Savage, Houston Texans
5 of 34
This Week
The Colts-Texans matchup had plenty of playoff implications. The Texans had more at stake considering they could not afford to lose this game and maintain a realistic shot at a postseason berth—yet that is exactly what happened.
Rookie Tom Savage, who had never thrown an NFL pass, took over when Ryan Fitzpatrick left the game with a broken leg. After completing his first throw, the fourth-round pick looked completely overwhelmed. He made a couple of nice deep throws but was mostly ineffective on any other complex throw. Savage finished 10 of 19 for 127 yards and had a costly INT to seal a very winnable game.

Savage is just getting started, and he certainly has the size and arm strength to be successful in this league. But he entered the NFL with a tendency to be careless with his decision-making. This will have to improve.
Ideally, Savage should have been kept on the bench for his rookie season, but circumstances have thrown him into the lion’s den, at least for a moment.

29. Geno Smith, New York Jets
6 of 34
This Week
Not many people were curious to know the outcome of two 2-11 teams duking it out other than trying to figure out next year’s draft order.
The Titans entered the game 30th in defense, which gave Smith a chance to look like a solid option in his audition for 2015. Though he didn’t blow the lid off with his performance, he did manage the second team victory of the season while avoiding any turnovers.

| @ TEN | W 16-11 | 16 | 28 | 57.1 | 179 | 1 | 0 |

Smith has the look of a fringe starting quarterback at this point in his career. He has generated more negative plays than positive plays and gets flustered under pressure. This could be the result of the system and surrounding cast, but there’s really no way to know for sure. We will just have to take his struggles at face value.
Smith’s 69.8 passer rating ranks last among all current starters with at least 100 snaps. Out of the 30 qualified QBs in the NFL, Smith ranks 29th in Total QBR (28.2).

27. Derek Carr, Oakland Raiders
8 of 34
This Week
The first time Kansas City and Oakland played, it was in the Black Hole—and the Raiders pulled off their first win of the season on a Thursday night.
This time around, Carr looked to pull off some similar magic and beat the Chiefs in Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City entered the game second in passing yards allowed (199) in the NFL, which suggested it would be difficult for the rookie to succeed. However, the Chiefs are not a team that has generated many interceptions (four).
Carr attempted a season-high 56 pass attempts but failed to complete half of his passes. He managed just 222 passing yards but did escape without throwing a pick for the fourth time in five games. Not bad for a rookie without a running game.

26. Drew Stanton, Arizona Cardinals
9 of 34
This Week
Stanton's Cardinals and the Rams battled on Thursday night in a critical matchup with playoff implications.
The Rams had not allowed a point in the last eight quarters heading into the game. Moving the ball on that defense proved to be a difficult task.
Stanton was limited in practice in Week 15 after dealing with a sore knee and ankle, according to AZCardinals.com, and that might have contributed to him leaving the game early with a sprained knee. He went 12-of-20 passing for 109 yards before exiting.

This Week
Shaun Hill took on the Cardinals on Thursday night in a battle of sloppy offense and good defense.
The Rams had been hot heading into the game but failed to play the role of the spoiler in front of a national audience.

With the Rams at home, Hill has a fighting chance to take down Eli Manning.
24. Robert Griffin III, Washington Redskins

Against the Giants on Sunday, Robert Griffin III looked far more decisive than we'd previously seen from him and even showed glimpses of the athleticism that mesmerized us all not long ago.
Despite throwing for 236 yards and a touchdown pass, Griffin was sacked seven times and fumbled on three occasions. His offense managed only 13 points on the day.

In a must-win scenario, the Bills faced the red-hot Green Bay Packers in Week 15.

21. Mark Sanchez, Philadelphia Eagles
14 of 34
This Week
Sunday Night Football featured an exciting rivalry game between the Eagles and the Cowboys. The last time these two had squared off, the Eagles won 33-10.
Sanchez hoped to wash the bad taste out of his mouth from the loss against the Seahawks, while the Cowboys were seeking both revenge and a playoff spot.
This was a great chance for Sanchez to prove he should remain ahead of Nick Foles as the Eagles QB, but his frantic play, poor decision-making and lack of production overall seemed to have an opposite effect.

20. Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers
15 of 34
This Week
What better time for the 49ers to play the stingiest pass defense in the NFL than in Week 15 as they were coming off a disappointing loss to the Raiders. The Seahawks were allowing 190 passing yards per game entering the week.
Kaepernick and the 49ers had generated only 49 points in the last four games combined. During that time, Kap had thrown three TD passes and five interceptions.
Kaepernick looked sharp early in the game, giving fans hope that he would finally play well against the Seahawks. The second half was another story, however, as injuries played a major role on a 49ers offense that was eventually rendered ineffective in all phases of attack.

For a mobile QB, Colin Kaepernick sure is horrendous at escaping pressure. So far this season he has been sacked a league-high 49 times. Much of that can be chalked up to indecision, holding the ball too long and poor scheming on offense.

When Jay Cutler took on Drew Brees on Monday Night Football, it was a battle between two 5-8 teams. Cutler should’ve been excited to face the 31st-ranked defense in the league, but unfortunately he made them look like a team of Pro Bowlers.
The winner of this game, as it usually goes, was the QB who made the fewest mistakes. Cutler threw three INTs in the loss and endured a series of boos from the crowd.

Cam Newton will only start in Week 16 against the Browns if the team is convinced he can protect himself during the game. "I don't want to put a guy out there that can't protect himself," head coach Ron Rivera said, via Joseph Person of The Charlotte Observer.
Anderson has done a fine job in Newton’s absence, but a matchup between Newton and Johnny Manziel certainly has more entertainment value.
16. Andy Dalton, Cincinnati Bengals
19 of 34
This Week
When Dalton headed to Cleveland to face the Browns, all eyes were on Johnny Manziel, who was making his first start. The real test, however, was if Dalton could have more success against a defense that handed him the worst game of the season in Week 10.
Dalton rebounded from that poor performance with a subtle improvement by passing for just 117 yards, at just 4.9 yards per attempt and no passing TDs. Luckily, the running game dominated and the defense shut out the Browns.

15. Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions

This Week
Matthew Stafford got to play under the roof against the 12th-ranked defense in the NFL. The Vikings held the Lions to 17 points the last time the two teams met, even though Bridgewater threw three picks. This time Minnesota held them to 16 points, but the Lions still found a way to win.
Despite throwing for more than 700 yards in the last two games, Stafford had a poor first half and was held to just 153 yards through the air. Fortunately for the fans in Motor City, that was just enough for the win.

Week 15 presented an underrated challenge for the Giants and Manning as they hosted the Redskins. The last time these two teams met, Manning torched the Redskins for 45 points. This game, however, was a different story.
Manning played well in the contest, avoiding an INT while completing 67.6 percent of his passes. The Giants won the game, thanks in large part to the impressive play of Manning and rookie WR Odell Beckham Jr., who had 12 catches for 143 yards and three TDs.

However, he played in seven games this year where he was held to under 200 yards passing. That seems alarming, but his legs and decision-making have been a great supplement to a less-than-stellar passing game.

Flacco faces a tough challenge against the J.J. Watt and the Houston Texans. Few QBs have played as well as Flacco has as of late. A win this weekend would put Baltimore in great position for a postseason berth.
8. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers
27 of 34
This Week
Rivers sought revenge against the Broncos, who beat the Chargers 35-21 in October. Last Sunday the Chargers had a chance to even the score in San Diego but fell short.
The veteran QB didn’t play well, tossing at least two INTs in a game for the third time all season. He also completed less than 60 percent of his passes for only the fourth time. San Diego was held to just 10 points on the day.
The loss severly hurt San Diego's playoff chances.

The last time Rivers was ranked eighth in the power rankings, he responded with one of his best games of the season against the Ravens. This time he looks to fight back against the 49ers in San Francisco.
WR Keenan Allen is battling an ankle injury and could miss the game. This could really limit the Chargers’ passing game. The 49ers are allowing just 6.7 yards per pass, good enough for eighth best in the league.
7. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys
28 of 34
This Week
Romo and the Cowboys geared up for a rematch with their division rivals in Philadelphia. Both teams entered the game 9-4, and the prize for the winner was sole possession of first place in the division. Romo had one of his worst games of the season last time these two teams played. However, this outcome was different.
Romo completed an impressive 71 percent of his passes and threw three beautiful TD passes to Dez Bryant to win the game 38-27.

6. Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts
29 of 34
This Week
The Colts played the Houston Texans for the second time this season. Last time the two teams played, it was a close game, and Luck found a way to edge the Texans. Per usual, he needed to be careful not to fall into the arms of J.J. Watt, who is unquestionably the most disruptive defender in the NFL.
Luck displayed inconsistency for the second straight week in one of his poorest performance of the season. Luck completed just 18 of 34 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns. However, the Colts still won the game and clinched the division title.

5. Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos
30 of 34
This Week
Last Sunday, Manning needed to turn his game up and play like the guy who broke NFL records last year. He is still playing elite football, but he has not looked quite the same lately. The Broncos headed to San Diego to play the Chargers in a rematch. The game plan was apparently to rely on the running game, which could have been because Manning was suffering from flu-like symptoms going into the game.
Peyton attempted just 20 passes for the second week in a row. He did, however, complete 70 percent of those passes for 233 yards and one TD in the victory.

Denver has been committed to its running game as of late and, perhaps not coincidentally, Manning has struggled some relative to his normal dominance. Cincinnati is tied for fourth in the NFL with a 6.4-passing-yards-per-attempt average allowed. This might be a good game for the Broncos to continue their balanced attack on offense. If for no other reason, it provides good practice for the playoffs.
4. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints
31 of 34
This Week
The 5-8 Saints needed a win on Monday Night Football against the Bears. Brees led the third-ranked offense into the winter air of Soldier Field. This is the environment where the veteran QB has been known to struggle, but against this team he had an equalizer.
The Bears had the 28th-ranked defense heading into the game, which meant there were plenty of opportunities for Brees to have success.
He completed a whopping 80.6 percent of his passes for 375 yards and three TD passes in the dominating victory. He is also sixth among qualified QBs with a Total QBR of 74.2.
