Gonzaga vs. Arizona: Live Score, Highlights and Reaction

Kevin McRaeDec 6, 2014

No. 3 Arizona extended its regular-season nonconference winning streak to 36 games on Saturday night, coming from behind to upend No. 9 Gonzaga 66-63 in overtime at the McKale Center in Tucson, Arizona.

Both teams played with a high level of defensive intensity throughout, creating the feel of a game contested much later in the season, and neither could find a way to break the contest open.

The Wildcats (8-0) never led by more than four points and trailed for the entire second half before a Brandon Ashley jumper with under-90 seconds to play knotted the game and forced overtime.

Ashley finished with a team-high 14 points, but it was senior point guard T.J. McConnell who made the clutch shots down the stretch in the extra frame, giving his team their first lead since early in the first half.

McConnell had six of his 12 points in overtime, accounting for all of Arizona’s scoring in the five-minute period.

Gonzaga (7-1) is going to watch the game film and see that this was one that got away.

The Bulldogs were in command for much of the second half, constantly hitting clutch shots whenever Arizona would get within one possession.

But they couldn't close the show and never led in overtime.

Kyle Wiltjer led four Zags in double digits with 15 points, but it was Byron Wesley who saw the game fall on his shoulders.

Trailing by three with just over three seconds remaining in overtime, Wesley was controversially fouled in the act of shooting a three.

Heading to the line, where he was 3-of-4 on the day, Wesley air balled the first free throw, missing the next two as well to stitch up a come-from-behind victory for the Wildcats.
