"The Montana conviction violated his probation in Texas on 2008 charges of fraudulently obtaining a controlled substance. A Texas judge sentenced Leaf to five years but gave him credit for time served.
Texas authorities can still extradite Leaf if they choose.
"
Leaf was infamously selected after Peyton Manning in the 1998 NFL draft by the San Diego Chargers. He spent four years in the NFL, two with San Diego and one with Dallas, before his career ended after the 2001 season.
He also served as a volunteer coach at West Texas A&M from 2006-08 before legal troubles forced him to resign.
