Smoot, who last played in the NFL in 2009 with the Washington Redskins, was taken into custody and charged before being released. He has moved into a media role since leaving the league:

"

Smoot contributes on-air segments to CSN Washington, WTTG-FOX 5 and CBS Radio affiliate WJFK-FM.

"Fred has been a contributor to the station and there are no plans for him to appear in the future," says WJFK-FM Program Director Chris Kinard.

"

The report also notes a woman told police her boyfriend "grabbed her during an altercation." No further information about the alleged incident leading to the charges was released.

Smoot played nine seasons in the NFL. In between two stints with the Redskins, he also spent two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. In 129 career games, he racked up nearly 450 tackles to go along with 21 interceptions and five forced fumbles.

The report didn't include when Smoot would be due back in court for the next step in the legal process.
