Jets vs. Bills: Score and Twitter Reaction from 2014 Regular Season

R. Cory SmithNov 24, 2014

It wasn't the same day or even location they expected, but the Buffalo Bills came away with a victory over the New York Jets, 38-3, at Ford Field on Monday night. The win keeps Buffalo in the AFC wild-card hunt with only five weeks remaining.

Buffalo was forced to relocate its home game to Detroit after a massive snowstorm left the field unplayable for the original Sunday start. Regardless of the site, the Bills are now 3-3 at "home" and are 6-5 heading into a crucial stretch.

The NFL's Twitter account provides a look at the final result from the Motor City:

Despite the distance for Bills fans, Buffalo benefited from the environment of an actual home game on Monday night. Everything from the Jumbotron to the midfield and end-zone logos were similar to Ralph Wilson Stadium.

The Bills' official Twitter account passed along images of the field makeover for the matchup:

Tim Graham of The Buffalo News also noted the crowd reaction when the teams hit the field:

Then again, Jets fans haven't had much to cheer about this season. All in all, it was a great atmosphere for a team that needed a boost after the recent issues in Buffalo.

Monday also meant the return of a vocal leader for the Bills with Fred Jackson playing in his first game since Week 10 against the Kansas City Chiefs. His touchdown helped secure the victory, but Jackson's presence was a motivation to the entire team.

His pregame comments were noted by Buffalo's official account:

On the field, it was Kyle Orton and Robert Woods who provided a spark for the Bills after weeks of futility on offense. After the team went 21 straight possessions without a touchdown, Woods and Orton connected in the end zone during Buffalo's first drive of the game.

Orton would finish the night 24-of-32 for 230 passing yards and two touchdowns. Woods led the team, having caught 118 of those yards along with the touchdown. Tight end Scott Chandler came away with a touchdown of his own, while running back Anthony Dixon also tallied another late score.

No offensive player stood out for the Bills as much as Mario Williams did on the other side of the ball. The defensive end was a brute force for Buffalo and continued a three-game sack streak after taking down Jets quarterback Michael Vick for another two on Monday.

Bleacher Report gives a look at one of the best sacks by Williams:

The Bills finished the night with seven total sacks and nine QB hits, with Williams leading the way. ESPN Stats & Info also points out the longevity of Williams' defensive dominance:

When Vick wasn't being thrown to the canvas by Williams, he still wasn't effective for the Jets. The former backup went 7-of-19 for 76 passing yards, four rushing yards and an interception.

Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com offered his take on the awful outing from Vick:

Vick was later replaced by Geno Smith, who completed just as many passes in his first nine attempts. Smith looked much more confident against the Bills, finishing 10-of-12 for 89 passing yards.

Another familiar face also took over late for the Bills but for completely different reasons. EJ Manuel saw some action late with the game already in hand, as he practiced handing off the ball.

Mike Rodak of ESPN.com commented on the late quarterback battle:

The entire Bills team had a huge night as the second half started with a Buffalo field goal that was followed by critical play from the special teams a few minutes later. Dixon blocked a punt by New York as Manny Lawson recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown.

Buffalo had gone nearly a decade without a score on a blocked punt, as the PR account noted:

Needless to say, Buffalo certainly turned a terrible situation into a memorable one. It was a game the franchise needed to win ahead of a difficult stretch starting next weekend.

The Bills will return home to take on the 7-4 Cleveland Browns at Ralph Wilson Stadium, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. One Buffalo official spoke about the stadium's current condition, per Schefter:

"We will be good to go Sunday," the Bills official said in a text message. "Shovelers are no longer needed. Had over 500 people [participating] and with the [temperature] warm-up, we made great progress."

As for the Jets, Rex Ryan and Co. head back to New York to face another division foe in the Miami Dolphins. With a chance at the playoffs completely gone and little hope to save the season, the 2-9 Jets are going through another disappointing year under Ryan.

Both teams are headed in different directions, but the Bills are happy to return with a win—to their actual home, of course.
