Odell Beckham Admits to Playing with Two Tears in Hamstring During Rookie Season

Matt FitzgeraldJan 25, 2015

New York Giants star rookie receiver Odell Beckham Jr. admitted to playing with muscle tears in his leg during the regular season in a post game interview after Team Irvin defeated Team Carter 32-28 in the 2015 Pro Bowl on Sunday.

Conor Orr of NFL.com passed along his comments: "I was never really fully healthy for the season anyways. So, I was just trying to manage and maintain it the best I could all year."

Orr added more details about the injury:

Beckham said the tears were sustained to his semitendinosus and bicep belly. The initial tear was suffered early in camp and the second happened a few weeks later when he tried to come back, the latter of which prolonged his comeback.

He said he'll need to shut himself down this offseason in order to enter next season in good shape, a process which begins immediately. He'll remain in Arizona to work on his recovery.

"

Will he be 100 percent ready to go once training camp kicks off in July? Bob Glauber of Newsday captured Beckham's response:

The 22-year-old finished the Pro Bowl with 5 catches for 89 yards.

Beckham was the No. 12 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft and has lived up to that billing. Even as the third receiver off the board, the LSU product may very well develop into the best player at his position from that loaded draft class.

Despite his immense success, though, Bleacher Report NFL analyst Chris Simms believes there's another player who deserves Rookie of the Year honors:

NFL.com's Gil Brandt remembered that before Beckham burst onto the NFL scene, he marveled at the wideout's physical gifts:

With amazing hands, an understanding of pro-style schematics from his time in Baton Rouge and sheer playmaking ability, Beckham has been a revelation for the Giants.

All that's really stopped Beckham this year has been injuries issues. A nagging hamstring ailment didn't allow him to make his NFL debut until Week 5, and he also had a sore back amid Week 12's loss to Dallas.

New York should welcome Victor Cruz back to the receiving corps in 2015 and have a healthier Beckham and feature running back in Rashad Jennings. With the draft and free agency still looming to upgrade the roster, the Giants could be serious contenders next year thanks to a high-octane offense.
