Bears vs. Packers: Score and Twitter Reaction from Sunday Night Football

Tim KeeneyNov 9, 2014

Aaron Rodgers needed just two quarters of work to embarrass the Chicago Bears.

The 10th-year quarterback threw for 315 yards and six touchdowns in the first half Sunday night, leading the Green Bay Packers to a 55-14 shellacking of their NFC North rivals.

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy raved about the performance afterward, via the team's Twitter feed:

Jordy Nelson was the biggest beneficiary of the historic outing, as he pulled in 152 yards and a pair of touchdowns on six receptions, but Randall Cobb, Eddie Lacy, Andrew Quarless and Brandon Bostick all found paydirt, as well.

Interestingly enough, per ESPN Stats & Info, the performance etched Rodgers into the franchise record books right next to Matt Flynn, the man who replaced him early in the third quarter:

Of course, that recordand many otherslikely could have been broken if the Packers chose not to rest Rodgers and many other starters shortly after halftime.

Green Bay had seven first-half possessions. Six went for touchdowns, while the other ended when Cobb fumbled into Chicago's end zone. The Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs and ESPN Stats & Info put the unbelievable half into historical perspective:

Chicago, on the other hand, was on the wrong side of history:

It was the perfect storm for the Packers. Rodgers was poised in the pocket and surgically precise with his throws, while the Bears looked completely lost and disinterested on the defensive side of the ball. And thus, the assault was on.

Rodgers connected with Bostick and Quarless on short touchdowns to begin the game. He found a shockingly wide-open Nelson twice on 73- and 40-yard touchdowns after that. Lacy capped a 95-yard drive by tearing through the Bears defense for 56 yards.

Finally, Cobb made up for his previous fumble with an amazing one-handed grab to push Rodgers' touchdown count to six:

Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune put it best at that point:

To make matters worse, Brandon Marshall, shortly after scoring Chicago's first touchdown, left with an ankle injury in the third quarter. That prompted Brian Urlacher to question his former team's strategy:

The Bears are an absolute mess right now. At 3-6, they will try to climb out of the NFC North's cellar when they host the Minnesota Vikings next week. At this point, though, anything that isn't a blowout would signify progress after their last two showings.

Green Bay, a game behind the 7-2 Detroit Lions at 6-3, plays host to the Philadelphia Eagles. And with Rodgers at the helm, the postseason is well within reach.
