Panthers vs. Eagles: TV Info, Spread, Injury Updates, Game Time and More

Chris RolingNov 8, 2014

The Philadelphia Eagles welcome the struggling Carolina Panthers to town for the finale to Week 10, a Monday Night Football showcase that was planned as a standoff between a pair of NFC contenders.

Cam Newton and the 3-5-1 Panthers have not upheld their end of the bargain, though.

Carolina's defense is a shell of the unit that led the team to 12 wins last season, while moving pieces around Newton has birthed an erratic attack at best.

Conversely, Philadelphia has six wins but is without starting quarterback Nick Foles, meaning Monday's affair will be unexpectedly competitive despite both team's current trajectories. It makes for what should be an offensive-minded affair to close out a stellar week of action.

Sustainability

All teams suffer a wealth of injuries and shuffle other names into the lineups in an effort to keep things going at their current clip.

For the Panthers, though, the season has been a nightmare in this regard.

Starting running backs Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams have fought health issues all season long, although last week both returned and the former looked sound with eight carries for 46 yards. The problem is, the line has been a hodgepodge of names all season and may or may not get Byron Bell, Amini Silatolu and Trai Turner back for Monday's showdown.

The Eagles know a thing or two about line issues, too. Todd Herremans is now lost for the season, although the team appears ready to finally get guard Evan Mathis back in the fold. Coach Chip Kelly is clearly hoping that the All-Pro guard can help turn things around in the trenches, as captured by Eagles Insider:

Given the number of issues, then, it makes sense that the Panthers rank 26th with an average of 94.7 rushing yards per game. Philadelphia ranks better, but it is discouraging that star back LeSean McCoy averages just 3.9 yards per carry and has 622 yards and a single score this season.

For Philadelphia, improving in the midst of a lot of moving pieces is a must against what has the look of somewhat weak opposition. For Carolina, Monday presents a must-win contest to save the season, something coach Ron Rivera seems adamant about in a tough NFC South race.

"I've been in a race like this before, we all have," he said, per STATS LLC on ESPN.com. "It ends up being the team that comes back, that gets up and keeps fighting. The next thing you know, you're right in the thick of things."

Which way Monday's marquee event swings will hinge on which team can overcome the number of obstacles in its way, not to mention the opposite team. For one side, however, the biggest hurdle of all has presented itself over the course of the last week.

Weight of the World

Mark Sanchez is not perhaps the savior Eagles fans want with Foles out for an extended period of time, but it is what they are getting.

Sanchez, the former New York Jets castoff, steps into the bright lights of Monday Night Football for his first start under center for the Eagles. One week removed from throwing a pair of touchdowns and interceptions in spot duty, the globe is about to find out whether or not Kelly's system can truly get the most out of any quarterback that takes the snap.

As Ben Shpigel of The New York Times writes, the Eagles believe Sanchez has two key traits that will help him execute the offense well:

"

The Eagles’ offensive coordinator, Pat Shurmur, called the team’s system 'quarterback-friendly' — as long as the quarterback makes good decisions. A quarterback’s two other most important attributes, Shurmur said, are his timing and his accuracy, and Sanchez has shown the Eagles that he has both.

"

Sanchez certainly has his work cut out for him, though. Not just because of the bright lights and pressure, either, but because the Panthers surprisingly rank 18th against the pass, allowing just 246.2 passing yards per game.

Kelly believes that one of the game's biggest hurdles will be overcoming the elite duo the Panthers tout in the heart of their defense, as illustrated by Zach Berman of the The Philadelphia Inquirer:

As the STATS LLC writeup notes, there were whispers of a change under center before Foles' injury.

No matter how he got here, Sanchez is once again the leader of an NFL team. Not only that, he commands one of the most prolific offenses the league has seen. No pressure.

Prediction

HOUSTON, TX- NOVEMBER 02: Jeremy Maclin #18 of the Philadelphia Eagles celebrates his touchdown reception from Mark Sanchez #3 of the Philadelphia Eagles against the Houston Texans in a NFL game on November 2, 2014 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. Eagles

Newton, who has developed into a serious rushing threat over the course of the past month, will give the Eagles some serious problems.

But a team in flux around Newton will prevent him from being able to do it all on his own while a defense that has given up more than 30 points on average since Week 3 struggles.

All Sanchez has to do is hand the ball off properly to McCoy, who should have no issues continuing his return to form against the league's 26th-ranked run defense.

That, and taking care of the football while hitting top wideout Jeremy Maclin (45 catches, 790 yards, eight touchdowns), will see Sanchez's first start in quite some time be a resounding success. Expect McCoy to lift his team late.

Prediction: Eagles 28, Panthers 24
