What Twitter Is Saying about the top MLB Free Agents

Jesse PantuoscoNov 5, 2014

What fun would MLB free agency be without all the rumors?

And speaking of rumors, where does Twitter think Pablo Sandoval is headed? San Francisco would make the most sense, since he’s won three World Series there in the last five years. But according to Fox’s Ken Rosenthal, Panda won’t be giving the Giants a hometown discount.

By rejecting the Giants’ qualifying offer, Sandoval is free to test the open market. One team that’s already showing interest is the Boston Red Sox, via SB Nation’s Joon Lee.

Considering Boston third basemen hit .211 last season (last in the major leagues), Sandoval would represent a major upgrade for the Sox.

But it certainly won’t come cheap. According to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman, Sandoval is hoping his next deal nets him at least nine figures.

To make room for Sandoval, the Red Sox would likely have to dump Will Middlebrooks. Middlebrooks is only 26 and has plus power, so that should attract some trade interest.

One third baseman the Red Sox won’t be pursuing is Aramis Ramirez. He’s decided to stay in Milwaukee for another season.

It will be interesting to see how the third base market plays out, especially with Chase Headley no lock to return to the New York Yankees.

But what folks really want to hear about is Max Scherzer. The 2013 AL Cy Young Award winner walked away from an impossible amount of money when he rejected Detroit’s $144 million extension offer last offseason.

As appealing as Scherzer and his skill set may be, don’t expect the Yankees to get involved, via Sports Illustrated.

So if the Yankees won’t be going after Scherzer, who will they be chasing this offseason? General manager Brian Cashman has never been one to sit idly by while the rest of the league empties its wallet.

After making a huge splash by signing Brian McCann, Masahiro Tanaka and Jacoby Ellsbury last offseason, Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News believes the Yankees will be looking into more affordable options this winter. Chase Headley and right-hander Brandon McCarthy both fit that criteria.

Keep in mind, Alex Rodriguez is returning from a one-year suspension. The Yankees still have a ton of money, but A-Rod’s $21 million salary will restrict their spending on some level.

A year ago, the market for Nelson Cruz was bone-dry. Of course, that was before he hit 40 homers and led the Baltimore Orioles to a division title.

After settling for a one-year, $8 million contract last offseason, Cruz should have no trouble securing a multiyear deal this time around. In fact, he has his sights set on a four-year deal, via Sports Illustrated.

Re-signing Cruz seems like a no-brainer for Baltimore. But with Andrew Miller and Nick Markakis also free agents, it's going to be tough to keep all three. The possibility of losing two-thirds of the team’s starting outfield should have Orioles GM Dan Duquette more than a little concerned.

The Tigers also need to be on high alert. Not only is there a strong chance Scherzer will sign elsewhere, but Detroit is also in danger of losing DH Victor Martinez. Though it would cost them a draft pick, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune believes the Seattle Mariners could make a run at V-Mart.

According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, Martinez is also seeking a four-year deal.

Soon, the free-agent dominoes will begin to fall. Until then, let the rumors swirl on.
