NFL Quarterback Power Rankings, Post-Week 9

Ryan RiddleNov 5, 2014

The NFL season is now more than halfway complete. Week 9 proved to be a particularly strange one in terms of quarterback performance.

Tom Brady is proving his doubters wrong on the subject of whether or not he is still an elite QB. He looked incredible against the talented Denver Broncos.

Ben Roethlisberger is playing the best football of his life, and Philip Rivers appears to have hit a wall without a viable running game and injuries up front.

The rankings this week have been shaken up quite a bit with the absence of Tony Romo and the return of Robert Griffin III.

Which rookie QB (if any) will separate himself from the pack and emerge from the bottom third of the rankings? All of them are currently playing like rookies still wet behind the ears.

It’s time to see where these QBs stand after nine weeks of NFL action.

Methodology

1 of 34

These rankings factor in several major attributes for the quarterback position.

Personal observation and opinion play a key role. A general section for film-review grades form a foundation, but the output of these QBs' most recent performances is what really sends them flying up and down the rankings each week.

Wins also give quarterbacks a slight boost in addition to their individual performances. The statistics used to help determine the ranking system are pulled from ESPN.comNFL.com and Pro Football Focus (subscription required), unless stated otherwise.

Stats that are factored in include passer rating, completion percentage, yards per pass, rushing yards per game, touchdown-to-interception ratio, fumbles lost and wins.

As the season moves on, the weighted influence from last year's output will be reduced by 25 percent each week.

When more than one quarterback plays for a team in one game, the QB with the most passing attempts is featured in the slide.

Note: Total QBR is a scoring system that assesses everything a quarterback does on the field. It is explained further on ESPN.com.

Also, Pro Football Focus grades every single play of the season to generate a cumulative point total, which weighs into the metric as well.

Quarterbacks Ranked Last Week but Not This Week

Broke his collarbone against the Texans and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.

32. Blake Bortles, Jacksonville Jaguars

3 of 34

This Week

32

Bortles and the Jags traveled to Cincinnati on Sunday to face the 4-2-1 Bengals. Jacksonville tried to overcome the second-worst turnover margin in the NFL (-10).

Bortles started off the game slow but did show some signs of progress in the second half of the game. Though they lost the game, Bortles had just his second multiple-TD game.

Season Average

29

It seems the more Bortles plays the deeper he digs himself into a hole. Of all the QBs who played this year, the Jaguars’ rookie is graded the lowest according to Pro Football Focus (which grades every snap of every game of the season).

One of the reasons Bortles is struggling so much with turnovers, aside from decision making, is that his release is taking a long time, which gives the secondary just enough time to react. He is currently leading the NFL in INTs with 13.

The Jaguars have scored 16 touchdowns this season and a rookie has played a role in 12 of those.

31. Michael Vick, New York Jets

4 of 34

This Week

31

Michael Vick took over the starting job from Geno Smith and had a tough time converting on third downs, succeeding on just 33 percent. The Chiefs boast the third-best defense on third downs, allowing just 32.9 percent conversions.

It’s also worth noting that the Chiefs were allowing the fewest passing yards per game at the time.

One bright spot for Vick is that he didn’t have a single turnover all day. That may not seem like a big deal, but for the Jets it certainly is.

It appears the performance that would eventually end Glennon’s reign as the starter would be this one against the Browns. Though he threw for 260 yards, his 51.5 percent completion rate was worrisome. He also threw two INTs in the game, which was the first time he’s done that all year long.

Next Week Outlook
