NFL Quarterback Power Rankings, Post-Week 9
The NFL season is now more than halfway complete. Week 9 proved to be a particularly strange one in terms of quarterback performance.
Tom Brady is proving his doubters wrong on the subject of whether or not he is still an elite QB. He looked incredible against the talented Denver Broncos.
Ben Roethlisberger is playing the best football of his life, and Philip Rivers appears to have hit a wall without a viable running game and injuries up front.
The rankings this week have been shaken up quite a bit with the absence of Tony Romo and the return of Robert Griffin III.
Which rookie QB (if any) will separate himself from the pack and emerge from the bottom third of the rankings? All of them are currently playing like rookies still wet behind the ears.
It’s time to see where these QBs stand after nine weeks of NFL action.
Methodology
1 of 34
These rankings factor in several major attributes for the quarterback position.
Personal observation and opinion play a key role. A general section for film-review grades form a foundation, but the output of these QBs' most recent performances is what really sends them flying up and down the rankings each week.
Wins also give quarterbacks a slight boost in addition to their individual performances. The statistics used to help determine the ranking system are pulled from ESPN.com, NFL.com and Pro Football Focus (subscription required), unless stated otherwise.
Stats that are factored in include passer rating, completion percentage, yards per pass, rushing yards per game, touchdown-to-interception ratio, fumbles lost and wins.
As the season moves on, the weighted influence from last year's output will be reduced by 25 percent each week.
When more than one quarterback plays for a team in one game, the QB with the most passing attempts is featured in the slide.
Note: Total QBR is a scoring system that assesses everything a quarterback does on the field. It is explained further on ESPN.com.
Also, Pro Football Focus grades every single play of the season to generate a cumulative point total, which weighs into the metric as well.

32. Blake Bortles, Jacksonville Jaguars
3 of 34
This Week
Bortles and the Jags traveled to Cincinnati on Sunday to face the 4-2-1 Bengals. Jacksonville tried to overcome the second-worst turnover margin in the NFL (-10).
Bortles started off the game slow but did show some signs of progress in the second half of the game. Though they lost the game, Bortles had just his second multiple-TD game.
| Opponent | Outcome | Comp | Att | PCT | Yards | TD | INT |
| @ CIN | L 23-33 | 22 | 33 | 66.7 | 247 | 2 | 1 |
Season Average
It seems the more Bortles plays the deeper he digs himself into a hole. Of all the QBs who played this year, the Jaguars’ rookie is graded the lowest according to Pro Football Focus (which grades every snap of every game of the season).
One of the reasons Bortles is struggling so much with turnovers, aside from decision making, is that his release is taking a long time, which gives the secondary just enough time to react. He is currently leading the NFL in INTs with 13.
The Jaguars have scored 16 touchdowns this season and a rookie has played a role in 12 of those.

Can Bortles lead his team to a victory across the pond against the 13th ranked defense? That would require sound decision-making with minimal turnovers, something the rookie has struggled to produce this year.
31. Michael Vick, New York Jets
4 of 34
This Week
Michael Vick took over the starting job from Geno Smith and had a tough time converting on third downs, succeeding on just 33 percent. The Chiefs boast the third-best defense on third downs, allowing just 32.9 percent conversions.
It’s also worth noting that the Chiefs were allowing the fewest passing yards per game at the time.
One bright spot for Vick is that he didn’t have a single turnover all day. That may not seem like a big deal, but for the Jets it certainly is.

Vick has been named the starter for Week 10 as long as he is healthy.
Can the worst passing attack in the NFL overcome a game against the Steelers? This may be the last time Vick gets a shot to prove he can be a starter in this league.
30. Brandon Weeden, Dallas Cowboys

Brandon Weeden failed to surpass the 200-yard mark through the air despite attempting 33 passes on the day. His two interceptions were also detrimental to the team.

28. Derek Carr, Oakland Raiders
7 of 34
This Week
Carr threw two INTs in the first half against the Seahawks' notorious secondary, one of which went for a touchdown. That put the Raiders in a hole they were unable to climb out of, although Carr did a nice job of keeping the game competitive in the second half.

The Broncos will be looking to rebound from a bad loss to the Patriots, so don’t expect them to tread lightly on this struggling organization.
The time for Carr to step up is now.
27. Teddy Bridgewater, Minnesota Vikings
8 of 34
This Week
Teddy Bridgewater struggled to connect on the deep ball and may not have the arm strength to be one of the league’s best, but he calmed down in the second half and connected on high-percentage passes while running for some positive gains.

Davis and the Rams will look to slay another giant this week when they face the red-hot Cardinals and a defense allowing just 19.5 points per game. To make matters worse, the Cardinals are leading the league with 12 interceptions.
25. Mike Glennon, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
10 of 34
This Week
It appears the performance that would eventually end Glennon’s reign as the starter would be this one against the Browns. Though he threw for 260 yards, his 51.5 percent completion rate was worrisome. He also threw two INTs in the game, which was the first time he’s done that all year long.

On Monday night the Eagles host the Panthers in an exciting matchup. The Panthers have caused more fumbles (14) than any other defense in the NFL which should really test Sanchez’s ability to avoid turnovers.
23. Ryan Fitzpatrick, Houston Texans

20. Robert Griffin III, Washington Redskins

This Week
The day started off with a bang for Washington as its bus got into an accident on the way over to the stadium. Even Robert Griffin III, who was sitting in the front, thought he was going to “fall out of the window shield,” per NFL.com's Conor Orr.
RG3 has one of the best deep balls in football. Aside from the 4th-down pass on the final drive and the INT before the half, he played really well.
Griffin’s day wouldn’t have felt so much like a failure if Colt McCoy hadn’t gone 36-of-42 in their upset win over the Cowboys.

Stafford will likely be aided by the return of Calvin Johnson, and he’s going to need it. The Dolphins are ranked third in the NFL in yards allowed (304.6). It’s time the Lions offense started living up to expectations rather than relying on an overachieving defense.
17. Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers
18 of 34
This Week
On Thursday night, the Panthers tried to rebound from a two-game losing skid by playing at home against the New Orleans Saints. Carolina was averaging 239.6 passing yards per game, which was 17th in the league at the time. The Saints defense was ranked 28th.
Cam Newton should’ve been able to move the ball more than he did against that vulnerable defense, but his lack of weapons on offense was glaring. He completed just 35 percent of his passes on the day.

Eli and his 23rd-ranked offense tried to exploit the same holes Big Ben did a week earlier against the best third-down defense in the league. With WR Victor Cruz gone for the year, Eli relied on WR Odell Beckham Jr. to attack the secondary but fell short of a victory.

Tannehill and the Dolphins travel to Miami to take on the stingiest defense in the NFL. The Lions are allowing a league-best 290.4 yards and 15.8 points per game.
Can Tannehill do what few QBs this year have been able to and have success? If last week was any indicator, we can expect to see a much-improved QB who is quickly trending upward.

So far this season, Matt Ryan is the highest-rated quarterback to have a losing record. Not only do the Falcons not have a winning record, but they are 2-6 and likely to miss the playoffs. I guess this proves that having a franchise QB and giving him elite weapons is not a guarantee of success.

8. Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks

This Week
Luckily for Seattle’s offense, they got to host the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. The Raiders had the worst third-down defense in the NFL, allowing 48.5 percent of their opponent’s third downs to be converted. However, they held the Seahawks to just 38 percent on third downs.
In addition, Wilson was held to a 48.6 completion rate and 179 yards passing, making this his worst game of the year.

As Steve Palazzolo of Pro Football Focus points out, “How does perception about Luck’s performance change if [Antrel] Rolle picks off a poor overthrow, DRC [Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie] wins the jump ball, and Luck loses the fumble?”
These are all things taken into account when grading at PFF.

Brees and the Saints entered the game with the second-highest conversion rate (51.2) of any offense on third down. On Sunday they took on the Panthers and the 21st-ranked defense. This was a pivotal divisional matchup for first place and a key game to help push one of these teams in a positive direction.

Drew Brees will have to bring his A-game against the desperate 49ers on Sunday. San Francisco also has the third-ranked pass defense in the NFL, and the Saints have the third-ranked passing attack.
Both teams are 4-4 on the season.

The Miami Dolphins did an incredible job on the Chargers as they forced three interceptions on their way to a shutout against one of the league’s best quarterbacks. That is quite the accomplishment for that defense.
