Swiss Indoors Basel 2014: Daily Scores, Results and Draw Schedule

Rory MarsdenOct 20, 2014

Swiss tennis star Roger Federer stole the show at the Swiss Indoors at Basel when he defeated David Goffin in the final, 6-2, 6-2.

This was the sixth time Federer has won the Swiss Indoors tournament during his career.

On the other hand, Rafael Nadal suffered a shock loss in the quarter-finals of the 2014 Swiss Indoors Basel, losing to 17-year-old wild card Borna Coric. The Spaniard looked out of sync from the opening exchange and couldn't turn the tide in the second set, playing arguably the worst match of his 2014 season.

After a phenomenal start to the season and a ninth French Open triumph, he picked up a wrist injury in the summer and recently developed appendicitis, which led to his first-round loss toย Feliciano Lopezย in Shanghai.

Nadal is due to have appendix surgery but, in an attempt to compete as the season draws to a close, is currently relying on antibiotics to keep him healthy.

As a result he expressed feelingย somewhatย apprehensive ahead of the Basel tournament, per Sky Sports:

"

It's going to be one of the most dangerous first rounds in a 500 tournament that I've played in a long time.ย I am not 100 per cent sure what is going to happen tomorrow. I haven't practised well enough or enough times. My body feels more tired than usual when I'm playing.ย Practising is one thing, competing is another. When you compete you have the adrenaline, the heart goes faster, and I don't know how my body is going to answer.ย I'm a little bit scared about how my body is going to react, some of my injuries have been after antibiotic treatments. Hopefully that won't be the case this time.

"

Milos Raonic also lost in the quarter-finals to Belgium's David Goffin, setting the table for hometown hero Federer to add yet another trophy to his mantelpiece.

This was a memorable tournament that has built excitement for the 2015 Grand Slam events.

Oct. 26: Roger Federer Wins at Home

2 of 8

Playing in front of the home crowd in Switzerland, Roger Federer took home an incredible sixth Swiss Indoors championship. While David Goffin deserves an immense amount of credit for making it to the finals, he was thoroughly outclassed by his competition.

Federer did not toy with his challenger and executed his game plan to perfection. Using his accuracy and ability to return the ball from anywhere on the court, Federer neutralized the speed of Goffin and forced the 23-year-old out of his comfort zone.

Add in his dominance on the second serve (Federer was at 93 percent and Goffin was at 25 percent), and it was clear that Federerโ€™s experience was enough to intimidate the young Belgian player.

Even at 33 years old, Federer is still one of the top players in the world. If the Swiss sensation continues to remain as focused on tennis as he has been throughout his career, there is no doubt he still has the ability to win a major tournament next season.

[2] Vasek Pospisil & Nenad Zimonjic defeatsย Dominic Inglot & Florin Mergea: 7-6 (6), 4-6, 10-4

Roger Federer will face David Goffin in the final of the Swiss Indoors after both men triumphed in a pair of engrossing semi-finals in Basel.

Federerโ€”the top seed for this competition on home soilโ€”was made to work especially hard for his place in the showpiece, as Ivo Karlovic pushed the Swiss maestro to three sets. The world No. 2 eventually triumphed 7-6 (8), 3-6, 6-3 over the towering Croatian and after looking a little flustered amid Karlovic's power play, it'll be intriguing to see just how Federer fares in the final.

Karlovic is always an awkward opponent, though. Standing just shy of seven feet tall, the world no. 31 is very difficult to dominate during a match; factor in a monster of a serve, and you've got a player who at times, looks unbreakable on his own service game.

With that in mind it was no surprise that the first set went to a tie break, and although Federer just about managed to ease through that to take the first set, it was clear he was in a game. Any lingering doubts about that were immediately eradicated, as Karlovic rallied to take the second set and a huge slice of momentum going into the decider.

But Federer is a man that has been in this situation countless times and it was no surprise to see him turn things up a notch in the final set. He played some of his best tennis of the entire tournament in that final set, and it's the level you suspect he'll have to preserve in the final if the Swiss is to sample glory in his home tournament.

The man he'll be facing in that final is Goffin and he was also made to battle for his final berth. Borna Coric was the man standing between the Belgian and a clash with Federer, and after disposing of Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals, the young Croatian was always going to be a testing foe.

Goffin made an excellent start to the match however, running out a 6-4 victor in the opening set. But the resilience showcased by Coric against Nadal last time out was on show in earnest once again, as he fought back magnificently to take the second set.

In the end, perhaps the effort needed, not only to beat Nadal, but to stay in the semi-final was too much, as Goffin rallied again in the final set. The world no. 28 was too classy for Coric in the decider and a 6-3 win was a fair reflection of his late dominance in the match.

Rafael Nadal suffered a shock loss to 17-year-old wild card Borna Coric on Friday, losing in straight sets after a subpar match from the second seed.

Nadal looked absolutely dreadful in the first set, hitting countless unforced errors to allow the 17-year-old Coric to run out to a 5-0 lead in just 22 minutes. The talented Croatian didn't play particularly wellโ€”Nadal simply couldn't sustain rallies or force his opponent into difficult situations.

The Spaniard saved himself the embarrassment of running into his first bagel since 2011 by breaking Coric's serve, but two games later, the first set was over.

Nadal recovered in the second set, as both men went back and forth without surrendering a single break. The teenager seemed to crumple down serving to keep himself in the match, hitting a double fault down 30-15, but he recovered to force a tiebreak.

In that tiebreak, Nadal's unforced errors returned, gifting the win to the Croatian wild card with a 7-4 win in the final game.

Fans and pundits immediately started speculating how much the appendicitis held back Nadal, particularly in the first set, when he hit just one winner.

The loss was also linked to some news that broke earlier in the day, when the Spaniard announced he wouldn't be competing in Paris due to "personal reasons," as reported by Agence France Presse (for NDTV Sports).

Plenty of star players have passed on the Paris tournament to be in top form for the Finals in London in the past, but with Nadal's struggles in the second part of the season, the illness and now Friday's poor showing, his participation in said Finals may even be in jeopardy.

Hometown favourite Roger Federer defeated fifth seed Grigor Dimitrov in two hard-fought sets in the final quarter-final, overcoming a slow start to dominate the tiebreak before easily taking care of business in the second set.

Federer struggled with the Bulgarian's serve early in the first set, winning just 20 percent of points on his first serve returns. Dimitrov displayed lots of aggression and moved the Swiss star around the court well, forcing a tiebreak.

He quickly fell behind in that tiebreak, however, as Federer shifted gear on his way to winning the first set. He continued at the same pace in the second set, punishing the Bulgarian with his serve and taking more risks in his returns, ensuring Dimitrov had no chance of forcing a third set.

In the early matches, David Goffin continued his impressive form by beating fourth seed Milos Raonic in three sets, while eighth seed Ivo Karlovic booked his ticket to the semi-finals with a win over Benjamin Becker.

Goffin will play Coric in one of the most unlikely semi-final matchups, and the latter will like his chances of upsetting the seventh seed after Friday's fantastic performance. Federer will play the big-serving Karlovic in a battle of favourites for the title.

Top-seeded Roger Federer kept alive his chances of a Swiss final with Rafael Nadal this week, making his way into the quarter-finals of the indoor championship with a win over Denis Istomin on Thursday.

The home hero got off to a less-than-adequate start against his Uzbek opponent and went down 6-3 in the first set, winning just three of his eight points on second serve, per the official ATP World Tour website.

Clearly irked by that opening performance, however, Federer bit back in the second and third sets. He gave a far more confident account of his abilities, and although Istomin bested his foe in aces recorded, the Swiss was dominant in all other areas en route to victory.

Other seeds to win on the day included Milos Raonic and Ivo Karlovic, who defeated Donald Young and Kenny de Schepper, respectively, to claim their places in the competition's final eight.

And it was somewhat surprising to see that despite their tags as favourites, both dropped sets on Thursday before ultimately finding form to emerge as victors.

Raonic in particular was made to work for his result, playing a total of 36 games before the result was assured.ย In the end, Raonic showed superb stamina to register 12 aces in the final set as the Canadian got the better of his American foe.

Benjamin Becker might have played just as many sets as Raonic, but his head-to-head against Mikhail Kukushkin came to an early end after the Kazakh retired at 4-0 down in the third.

Both of the first sets went to a tiebreaker, the first going in Kukushkin's favour before Becker found momentum to take the second, eventually outlasting his rival.

Tennis writer Chris Goldsmith was left confused as to what the reason was behind Kukushkin's reason for exiting early:

"

Kukushkin retired 0-4 down in the 3rd?

โ€” Chris Goldsmith (@TheTennisTalker) October 23, 2014"
"

What happened to Kukushkin ?

Earlier in the day, Borna Coric waded past Andrey Golubev in arguably the most one-sided affair of Thursday's action.

Coric was lethal as long as his first serves found their mark, with his opponent managing to win just two points from the 25 played on Coric's first serve.

That match was only just shaded by Grigor Dimitrov as the least competitive fixture, however, as the Bulgarian trotted to take a straight-sets victory over Vasek Pospisil in Thursday's final encounter.

Marin Draganja and Henri Kontinen defeat [3] Rohan Bopanna and Daniel Nestor: 6-1, 7-6

Dominic Inglot and Florin Mergea defeat Scott Lipsky and Philipp Oswald: 7-6, 6-4

Roger Federer had no difficulties against Gilles Muller, needing just 46 minutes to advance to the next round.

The hometown favourite's service was clicking from the very first game, as Federer won an astonishing 20 of 21 points on his first serve. Muller had no idea what hit him and couldn't even piece together a single break chance, while the 33-year-old needed just five chances to break four times.

He was clearly in a great mood, and took a cheeky dig at a reporter after the match, via LetsTalkTennis:

"

Federer was asked if he knew if 46 minutes is a new record. Roger: "No, that's your job." #atp #SwissIndoors

โ€” LetsTalkTennis (@letstalktennis1) October 22, 2014"

Federer will play Denis Istomin next, and the Uzbek will undoubtedly present him with more of a challenge after showing his form in a blowout of Jerzy Janowicz.

Rafael Nadal cruised through his second-round match against Pierre-Hugues Herbert, surrendering just two games to the qualifier in and taking care of business in less than an hour.

The French qualifier was clearly overmatched and never forced Nadal to produce any of his top tennis, as the second seed almost looked embarrassed leaving the court. Herbert hit 11 double faults and completed just 27 percent of his first serves, allowing Nadal to step into his returns and make quick work of his opponent.

Herbert's struggles were perhaps most evident in high-pressure situationsโ€”the Frenchman gave Nadal six chances to break, and the Spaniard found success on five of those. With a further 30 unforced errors, Nadal was comfortable just stroking the ball from the baseline and waiting for Herbert to make a mistake.

While Nadal will undoubtedly be happy with the win, this kind of one-sided match was hardly what he needed. The Majorcan is still looking for his best form heading into the World Tour Finals, and more competitive matches will give him a far better chance of discovering it.

The winner of the match between 17-year-old wild card Borna Coric and Andrey Golubev awaits the Spaniard in Round 3.

Belgium's David Goffin had a surprisingly difficult time against Croatia's Ivan Dodig, eventually emerging victoriously after two hard-fought sets. He'll play hard-serving Ivo Karlovic in the next round.

Marcin Matkowski and Leander Paes defeat Jamie Murray and John Peers: 7-5, 5-7, 10-5

Stanislas Wawrinka crashed out of the 2014 Swiss Indoors in Basel on Tuesday at the first hurdle as he lost in three sets to Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin in front of a home crowd.

The third seed went a set down after Kukushkin took the opener 6-4 only for a tense second set to go all the way to a tiebreak.ย

However, the Swiss Wawrinka bulldozed his opponent to win the set, taking the tiebreak 7-1 as he looked to seize the momentum.

But some sloppy play from Wawrinka gave Kukushkin his opportunities and when the home favourite double-faulted to go 5-3 down in the final set, his opponent did not falter and served out the match.

Elsewhere, fourth-seed Milos Raonicโ€”who is in the mix to qualify for the ATP Finals in London next monthโ€”came through his opening round match against America's Steve Johnson in two sets.

The opener went with serve throughout and thus a tiebreak was needed, the Canadian eventually winning it 7-4.

Raonic then saved four break points and, with terrific timing, won the 10th game of the second set on Johnson's serve to claim the match.

Another seed, Ivo Kalorvic, also came through in two sets. The Croatian put in a masterful service display to beat Lukas Rosol, tying up the second set 6-3 after winning a first-set tiebreak and throwing down 23 aces in the process.

Raonic will faceย American Donald Young in the next round while Karlovic takes onย Kenny De Schepper, the Frenchman having also won in two sets on Tuesday against Federico Delbonis.ย

Ivan Dodig was taken to three sets by Switzerland'sย Marco Chiudinelli but came through eventually to take the victory and advance to the next round. The same was true forย Vasek Pospisil in his win over Jarkko Nieminen.

Wednesday sees home favourite Roger Federer take to the court for his match against Gilles Muller while Rafael Nadal is also in action, taking on Frenchmanย Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo defeat Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Steve Johnson: 6-1, 6-2

Vasek Pospisil and Nenad Zimonjic defeat Sandro Ehrat and Henri Laaksonen: 6-4, 6-1

Despite his pre-tournament nerves brought on by recent appendicitis, Rafael Nadal eased his way through to the second round of the 2014 Swiss Indoors on Monday in Basel with a two-set victory over Italy's Simone Bolelli.

The Spaniard has had a troubled second half to the season and is still in some doubt as to whether he will be able to compete in London at the ATP World Tour Finals, per the Press Association, viaย The Guardian, but he looked on good form in his Swiss opener.

After a monster opening game, Nadal broke Bolelliย twice in the first set despite his opponent's superior first-serve percentage and cruised into a comfortable one-set lead.

The 14-time Grand Slam winner then went up a gear for the next set, finding his rhythm on serve and taking a crucial break to make it 4-2.

A fourth break of the match completed the win for Nadal in just 71 minutes and he seemed to take a great deal of confidence from a fine performance, per AFP (h/t Yahoo):

"

I'm very happy for what happened. With my (summer-long) wrist injury and now the appendix, it's not been a great season. This was a dangerous match for me and I won it.ย I'm very pleased with what happened. When you are 10 days on antibiotics, the body goes down some, you feel a little scared on how you will play.ย But I'm happy with my performance today, I'm looking forward to playing the next round on Wednesday.

"

Nadal will face Pierre-Hugues Herbertโ€”who beat fellow Frenchmanย Edouard Roger-Vasselinย in his openerโ€”in the next round, and on Monday's form, he should advance.

Belgian seventh-seed David Goffin weathered a tough opening set which went to a tie break againstย Dominic Thiem and eventually claimed a solid two-set victory.

Elsewhere, America'sย Donald Young took the initiative from a first-set tiebreak victory to win his own opener in two sets againstย Carlos Berlocq.ย

Tuesday sees home-favourite Stanislas Wawrinka get his campaign started against Kazakhย Mikhail Kukushkin while Milos Raonic is also in action.ย
