Vernon Davis', Vance McDonald's Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 6

Chris RolingOct 13, 2014

Vernon Davis returned for the San Francisco 49ers on Monday against the St. Louis Rams and, along with fellow tight end Vance McDonald, was the early offensive focal point for a sluggish offense.

Of course, in turn this means the two drove fantasy owners mad.

Right before halftime, Davis was targeted four times, but the normally reliable tight end caught just half of the looks for all of 13 yards.

As Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com illustrates, the staff elected to roll with multiple two-tight-end looks Monday:

Instead of it being Davis as the big-play threat, though, it was McDonald, who brought in his lone target for 21 yards.

The final numbers show where both men stand in terms of priority on the offense and as opposed to each other at the position:

V. Davis33010.0063
V. McDonald12121.0022

While the outburst from McDonald is notable, it is literally his first blip on the fantasy radar all season. When Davis was out with an injury, the team deferred to wideouts more than ever rather than go McDonald's way.

In all likelihood, the approach to incorporate both tight ends a tad Monday night was an opponent-based decision. The San Francisco offense still runs through the running backs and wideouts, as Davis, with the exception of a 16-point outburst in Week 1, has been a non-factor this year.

Moving forward, Davis is merely a fringe TE2 unless he gets an absolutely jaw-dropping matchup.

In other words, he is a must-start option in two upcoming games against the rival Seattle Seahawks, one of the teams that surrender the most points on average to the position, but outside of that, he is only a week-to-week player if owners have no other option.
