Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods, Scott Chandler's Post-Week 6 Fantasy Reaction

Nate LoopOct 12, 2014

One can expect a fairly low ceiling for Buffalo Bills skill players while Kyle Orton is the starting quarterback, but tight end Scott Chandler and wideout Robert Woods were certainly busting through it in Week 6 against the New England Patriots. As for rookie wide receiver Sammy Watkins, fantasy owners are likely to feel every bit of his growing pains as he adjusts to his second quarterback of the season.

Orton completed passes to just five different players on the afternoon and clearly favored the two aforementioned veterans.

Chandler notched over 100 yards receiving for the first time this season on six catches, and Woods reeled in seven catches for 78 yards, including a first-quarter touchdown and a crucial two-point conversion in the fourth.

Watkins struggled to get open on the afternoon and picked up a solitary catch for 20 yards. It is a testament to his already obvious ability—and the thin Bills wide receiver corps—that the Patriots decided to stick star cornerback Darrelle Revis on him for the majority of the contest. Ben Volin of The Boston Globe noted that it took quite some time for Orton to even look in the rookie's direction:

It's an encouraging performance from Chandler, but it's unlikely that he will continue to put up numbers anywhere close to what he saw against the Patriots. However, his targets have increased steadily this season, and he could be a worthwhile TE2 in deeper leagues.

Woods had a fine performance, but this is only the second time this season he's accrued more than 70 yards in a game. He's worth monitoring in the weeks to come but is at best a WR4 at this point with limited upside.

Clearly, Watkins isn't yet capable of beating top-tier cornerbacks, but he could get to that point sooner than most people think. He's already topped 100 yards receiving this season, scored two touchdowns and has racked up eight targets four times this season, per ESPN.com.

He remains a solid WR2 option and thankfully doesn't have to deal with Revis again until the final week of the regular season.
