Shelby provided his version of events surrounding his arrest, according to Andrew Abramson of the Palm Beach Post:

"

Shelby has told those close to him that the initial accusation was false and that [there] were racial undertones. He is black and the accuser was white. It’s unclear if she or the club knew he was an NFL player.

When police officer Zachary Baro told Shelby to leave the club, he denied that he did anything wrong. Shelby claims that the officer then aggressively forced him outside the club and became infuriated when Shelby began recording the incident with his cell phone. Shelby apparently wanted evidence that he was being mistreated by Baro.

"

Updates from Monday, Oct. 6

The Miami Dolphins released a statement from head coach Joe Philbin discussing Derrick Shelby's arrest and current status within the organization:

"

We were disappointed to learn about Derrick’s arrest. Everyone in this organization is held to high standards of conduct and professionalism. Based on my conversations with Derrick and the information we have thus far, Derrick will be placed on Indefinite Club Suspension. When we have completed all of the necessary diligence, we will make a final determination on his discipline.

"

David Canter of DEC Management, who represents Shelby, quickly followed with a statement in response to the Dolphins' decision to suspend the defensive end:

Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald later added insight behind the Dolphins' decision:

Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Derrick Shelby was arrested on Saturday evening after an altercation at a nightclub.

Linda Trischitta of the Sun Sentinel reported on the incident:

"

Mami Dolphins defensive end Derrick Shelby was arrested at a Fort Lauderdale nightclub after an incident that began with touching women without their permission, according to police reports released on Monday .The third-year Dolphin, through his agent, is maintaining his innocence.

"

The report provided additional details:

"

According to the police report, security workers at CYN nightclub told a Fort Lauderdale police officer who was working an off-duty detail that Shelby 'was causing a disturbance' and 'touching females at [the] location without their permission' early Saturday.

After being told several times to leave the club, also known as Off the Hookah, at 111 SW 2nd Ave., Shelby refused, began blocking the exit and said, 'What are you going to do,' the report said.

Shelby appeared intoxicated and began photographing and taping the off-duty officer, Lauren Collins, who requested backup assistance. When other officers arrived, Shelby refused to release his arms so that he could be arrested and continued to struggle, according to Collins.

A Taser was fired three times at Shelby before he was taken into custody, Collins wrote in her report.

"

Shelby was charged with misdemeanor offenses of trespassing after a warning and resisting arrest without violence.

Andrew Abramson of the Palm Beach Post passes along the team's statement:

Eric Kay of CBS Sports tweeted the mugshot of a bruised and battered Shelby:

Shelby, 25, is a key contributor in the team's defensive line rotation and has accumulated six tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery in four games this season.

A third-year player out of Utah, Shelby had a solid season in 2013, finishing with 34 tackles, 2.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. He appeared to be really coming into his own this season and had made himself a valuable part of the team's defense.

It remains to be seen how his pending legal troubles will affect his standing on the team.
