New York Jets safety Calvin Pryor will not return to Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions after re-injuring what's being characterized as a thigh injury in the second quarter.

Pryor, the Jets' first-round pick in May's draft, came up limping just before the teams were due to head into the locker room. He was attended to by trainers on the sidelines and was initially ruled questionable to return, but ESPN's Rich Cimini received confirmation from the team he was out for the game:

The former Louisville standout had been having an up-and-down game before exiting. He and Muhammad Wilkerson combined to sack Matthew Stafford in the second quarter, his first sack as a pro. Pryor had three total tackles before leaving. But he was also beat over the top in the passing game, most notably on a 59-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Ross.

While Rex Ryan could do without the rookie mistakes, the Jets coach needs all the talent he can get in the secondary. New York, which lost top cornerback Antonio Cromartie in the offseason, has struggled finding replacements and has been uncharacteristically sloppy at times. Football Outsiders' DVOA ranks their pass defense 13th in the NFL, which will probably get worse when the numbers are adjusted for opponents.

New York will be reliant on Jaiquawn Jarrett while Pryor is out of the lineup. Jarrett, a former second-round pick out of Temple, is in his second season with the Jets. He was released by the Eagles before the 2012 season.
