Matchup of the Week: Philadelphia Eagles at San Francisco 49ers

There are many exciting matchups in Week 4, but the most intriguing game on the schedule will be the Philadelphia Eagles traveling to San Francisco to take on the 49ers at Levi’s Stadium.

Both Philadelphia and San Francisco are considered postseason contenders in the NFC, but the two franchises have started the season in very different ways. While the Eagles have managed to take advantage of their favorable schedule by winning three-straight games, the 49ers have struggled, losing against Chicago and Arizona over the last two weeks.

For Philadelphia, the key will be consistency. After trailing in each matchup thus far this season, the Eagles must find their rhythm early and carry it over into a big second half as well. On the other hand, the 49ers must finish each game stronger than they have.

ESPN Stats & Info Twitter account talked about the difference between San Francisco and Philadelphia through three games:

John Clark of CSNPhilly.com talked about how well the Eagles have performed in the second half of games and how poorly the 49ers have performed:

Philadelphia linebacker Connor Barwin told Jim Corbett of USA Today about the need to play more consistently from the very start of each game:

"

We're 3-0, but we've definitely had our fair share of mistakes, problems we need to get fixed. We're making mistakes early on in games we can't afford to do because teams will beat us down the road. ... We have to not fall behind early so we put ourselves in more manageable third downs, so we can get off the field. We need to put it altogether all game long.

"

The Eagles aren't alone when it comes to trying to find consistency. San Francisco has struggled offensively and is currently ranked 18th overall in both passing and rushing yards per game. The 49ers defense is still one of the most dangerous in the NFL, even considering injuries, but the franchise must focus on building an offensive rhythm.

San Francisco is sixth against the rush thus far in 2014 but has given up an average of 226.3 passing yards per game. While LeSean McCoy will face a tough test against the 49ers' front seven, quarterback Nick Foles should be able to thrive after averaging 310.3 yards per game.

Add in the fact that the 49ers are having trouble finding any consistency with the rushing attack (Carlos Hyde and Frank Gore combined for 23 yards in Week 3), and Philadelphia’s defense will be able to focus more on Colin Kaepernick and San Francisco’s pass attack.

If the Eagles stifle the 49ers on the ground and minimize the damage through the air, Philadelphia should be able to pull out the victory in front of the San Francisco faithful.

Predicted Winner: Philadelphia 30, San Francisco 24
