Keenan Allen's Updated 2014 Fantasy Outlook Heading into Week 4

R. Cory SmithSep 25, 2014

It's been a tough year for fantasy owners of Keenan Allen. The 2013 Offensive Rookie of the Year runner-up has been underwhelming thus far but has a chance to turn a corner in Week 4.

Through three weeks, the San Diego Chargers receiver has a total of 17 targets for 12 receptions and 109 yards. That's a grand total of 10.9 fantasy points, with slightly more for disappointed PPR owners.

Matters have been so bad that the idea of completely dropping him has been thrown around, as Josh Moore of 4for4.com notes:

If the slow start seems familiar, that's because it is. Sure, he was a rookie in 2013, but his progress in the passing game was nearly as slow as this season.

The rookie didn't show up in the offensive game plan until the team faced the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3, which was still a modest five receptions for 80 yards. Below is a look at his stats from the first three weeks in 2013 compared to this season.

For the record, Allen had 15 receptions for 222 yards and two touchdowns in Weeks 4 and 5 last season. Allen's fantasy owners can finally step off that ledge this week as he finally has a matchup he can exploit.

Going up against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Allen takes on a team that is giving up the eighth-most points to fantasy wide receivers. During the first three weeks, Allen faced corners like Patrick Peterson and Richard Sherman—the Jaguars don't have that luxury.

As Mike Clay of Pro Football Focus notes, Allen also had a difficult test against the Buffalo Bills:

Jacksonville is allowing 306 yards per game and has given up eight touchdowns through the air, which both rank last in the league. Expect Philip Rivers to look his way much more this week against the Jacksonville Jaguars' horrid defense. Michael Fabiano of NFL.com offered his take on Allen's chances of breaking out this week:

"

This week, he's playing the Jaguars. So have some faith and start Keenan Allen. They've given up an average of almost 24 fantasy points to wide receivers this year. If Keenan Allen can't produce against the Jaguars in San Diego this week, well, it is time to push the panic button. Start him this week and hope for better things.

"

Allen's favorable matchups don't end against the Jaguars, though. In the next three weeks, the Chargers take on the New York Jets, Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs, three defenses Allen can explode against.

Owners who drafted Allen likely viewed him as a low-end WR1 or WR2 option. With the production that he'll post in the coming weeks, they might finally see those expectations come to fruition. Continue to trust Allen and watch the numbers finally start racking up against the Jaguars.
