Breakdown of Week 4 Slate

Six months ago, Steve Smith was released by the Carolina Panthers after 13 years with the franchise. On Sunday, he faces the team for the first time in his career.

Now with the Baltimore Ravens, Smith has been looking forward to the Week 4 matchup. Following the cut, Smith made it obvious exactly what he planned to do against the Panthers when he faced them, per Josh Alper of NBCSports.com:

“I want to make sure that whatever team I go to, they’re going to get the best, in shape 35-year-old guy they can get. If that happens to run through Bank of America Stadium, put your goggles on cause there’s going to be blood and guts everywhere,” Smith said.

Let's just say Smith Sr. won't be listening to Sarah McLachlan during pregame warm-ups.

During Smith's first three weeks with the Ravens, he has produced 290 yards and a touchdown. Last season, it took Smith six games before reaching that yardage total. He also never had over 100 yards in a game in 2013, something he's already done twice with Baltimore.

A West Coast shootout will draw in audiences after the battle in Baltimore. Both the Eagles and Niners came into the season with Super Bowl aspirations, but they are headed in separate directions after three contests.

Philadelphia has surged late in games this season, leading to a 3-0 record. San Francisco, on the other hand, has squandered first-half leads and stands at 1-2. ESPN Stats & Info noted the disparity between the two franchises:

Looking to turn things around at home, a victory over the Eagles would heal early wounds for the 49ers. A loss, well, that would drop San Fran to 1-3 and into the cellar of the NFC West.

The prime-time matchup on Sunday Night Football promises to be a shootout to watch. Drew Brees and Tony Romo face defenses that have been ravaged throughout the season, so a repeat of last season seems likely.

Brees went off for 392 yards and four touchdowns last season, but Romo was inconsistent with just 128 yards and a touchdown. Expect plenty of huge plays from both quarterbacks on the big stage, with the final drive being the deciding factor in AT&T Stadium.
