Jacob deGrom Ties MLB Record by Striking out 8 Straight Batters vs. Marlins

Rob GoldbergSep 15, 2014

New York Mets rookie pitcher Jacob deGrom had himself quite a start to his game against the Miami Marlins Monday night.

While the team is playing for little at this point of the year, the 26-year-old pitcher had a record-setting performance in Monday's start, according to ESPN Stats & Info:

After striking out eight batters in a row to start the game, it was the opposing pitcher who finally ended the streak and the perfect game, as Kevin Burkhardt of Fox points out:

The good news is he was able to recover and keep up his strong showing through the first half of the game:

He ended up finishing with 13 strikeouts in seven innings while allowing three runs. He was in position to earn the win after the seventh inning, but the bullpen could not hold on for a win.

The right-handed deGrom was coming off the best start of his career with eight shutout innings and nine strikeouts against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday. For the season, he had an 8-6 record with a 2.62 ERA and 121 strikeouts in 20 starts coming into the day.

Anthony DiComo of MLB.com notes what this performance can mean for the individual awards at the end of the year:

With his overall numbers and his ability to close the year strong, it is hard to argue against deGrom at least being a top candidate for the National League Rookie of the Year award. Billy Hamilton of the Cincinnati Reds is likely his top competition after topping 50 stolen bases in his first full season in the majors.

No matter what, it seems clear deGrom is going to be a big part of the Mets' rotation in the future. When Matt Harvey returns from his Tommy John surgery, this could be a scary tandem going forward.
