Week 2 NFL Picks: Latest Spreads and Over-Under Predictions for Every Game

Steven CookSep 12, 2014

The Week 2 slate of the NFL season already kicked off with the Baltimore Ravens ousting the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night, but 15 more enticing matchups await as teams start to figure out what they're made of in 2014.

It can be difficult to figure out what direction teams are headed in after just one regular-season game, but early signs are cropping up around the league. At the same time, all it takes is one solid game to erase a season-opening slip-up.

Personnel, coaching and formation changes on both sides of the ball can significantly impact the hierarchy of the league from year to year, and this year is proving to be no exception. Surprises were the norm in Week 1—expect more of the same moving forward.

After notching surprise victories to open up the season, the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills will battle to see which AFC East team can turn heads by starting 2-0.

Buffalo traveled to Chicago to open the season, but it started hot against the Bears and didn't look back. Behind nearly 200 team rushing yards, the Bills ran their way to a 23-20 overtime victory and thwarted Chicago's late comeback bid.

But the Dolphins are well-versed in their own right on resounding opening-weekend victories, after dominating the New England Patriots in the second half en route to a 33-20 win. Miami's front seven wreaked havoc, sacking Tom Brady four times and stalemating the run game.

However, Ryan Tannehill's career against the Buffalo defense hasn't been pretty, nor was his performance in Week 1, per WGR's Howard Simon and Sports Illustrated's Aaron Nagler:

The Dolphins defense was stout in Week 1, but it faces a much more dangerous rushing attack with Fred Jackson and Anthony Dixon both having success with big plays last weekend. However, Miami's defense should be able to keep the Bills somewhat under wraps.

But if Tannehill doesn't improve, it won't be enough to give the Dolphins the win on the road.

Prediction: Bills win, 20-16

Detroit Lions at Carolina Panthers (-1; O/U 43.5)

The Detroit Lions kicked off their season with a dominating Monday Night Football victory over the Giants, but it won't be easy repeating that success at the Carolina Panthers.

Without Cam Newton in the fold, the Panthers didn't skip a beat offensively by jumping out to an early lead over Tampa Bay. From there, the defense did the rest by forcing three turnovers and holding the Bucs to just 264 total yards.

The Lions were similarly impressive in Week 1, albeit coming against a team less expected to contend in the Giants. Matthew Stafford threw for 346 yards in a 35-14 win.

The Panthers may be without DeAngelo Williams in the backfield, as he's been ruled questionable after missing practice Friday, per ESPN's David Newton. But as the team's Twitter noted, head coach Ron Rivera is happy with his current backfield:

Detroit's front seven won't be nearly as disruptive against a strong offensive line, and Newton's supposed return will cause problems that Derek Anderson could not. With that said, a 43.5-point line for a game between two strong defenses is a bit high.

Expect this game to be low-scoring, but the Panthers will shine through thanks to a strong defense limiting Stafford's success through the air.

Prediction: Panthers win, 20-17

Dallas Cowboys at Tennessee Titans (-3; O/U 49)

A strong season was not expected for the Titans in Ken Whisenhunt's first season nor for the Cowboys with a hapless defense, but only one of those expectations was validated in Week 1.

That, of course, was the Cowboys struggling in a 28-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers that wasn't as close as the final score showed. The Niners jumped out to a 28-3 lead early, before two garbage-time touchdowns closed the gap a bit.

Tony Romo's shortcomings were well-documented, with him throwing three interceptions that paved the way to four team turnovers.

That could spell disaster against the Titans, who dominated the Chiefs in Week 1. They forced three interceptions against the usually reliable Alex Smith and completely shut down Jamaal Charles.

The Titans should continue their defensive success against the Cowboys, who didn't generate much offensively in Week 1. That's a terrible sign for a team whose defense is expected to be one of the worst in the league.

As for Jake Locker and the Tennessee offense, they took care of the ball in Week 1 and put 26 points on a strong Kansas City defense.

The Titans offense is nowhere near elite, so it won't be gashing that Cowboys defense as much as many other teams will. But with a strong defense of their own, the Titans will be able to squeak out a low-scoring affair.

Prediction: Titans win, 24-23
