Allen Hurns, Chad Henne's Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 1

Steven CookSep 7, 2014

The warning signs emerged this preseason, but now it's clear—Allen Hurns has a chance to be one of fantasy football's biggest sleepers in 2014, and Chad Henne could be better than advertised throwing the ball to him.

The Jacksonville Jaguars rookie broke out immediately along with the Jags' passing game upon the start of his team's Week 1 opener at Philadelphia. And that might be putting it lightly.

Hurns caught his first pass of the season—and his career—for a 34-yard touchdown from Henne to put Jacksonville up 7-0 early against the Eagles. And he wasn't done there, turning around to catch a 21-yard touchdown just over two minutes later.

That's right—the undrafted rookie's first two catches were scores. By the end of the game, Hurns upped his numbers to four catches for 110 yards, while Henne went 24-of-43 for 266 yards and two scores as the Jaguars lost 34-17.

Michael DiRocco of ESPN made quite the understatement in terms of Hurns' outing:

Hurns was being talked about plenty around Jacksonville after his monster preseason. He led the NFL in receiving yards with 232, and that was after coming into training camp facing an uphill battle to secure a roster spot.

Not lost in the shuffle is Henne's strong start to 2014 as well. Reuben Frank of CSN noted his insane beginning:

Henne's starting spot has never been in question, at least to Jaguars coaches, but he certainly started the season under the magnifying glass with rookie Blake Bortles taking off in the preseason. However, Jacksonville won't be pulling him any time soon if he continues this level of play.

The 29-year-old quarterback has been a fantasy afterthought entering 2014, but he's making a serious case as a waiver option. If you have a solid starter but no backup, Henne might be worth the bench spot.

As for Hurns, you might want to go ahead and make a waiver claim for him now. He won't be available for long.
