Original Text
Detroit Lions rookie tight end Eric Ebron has been dealing with a hamstring injury, which kept him out of the team's Week 7 contest.
Heading into Week 8, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press confirms Ebron is still not practicing as a result of his hamstring injury:
Ebron, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft, was an intriguing choice by the Lions. The front office opted to bolster an already high-octane passing attack by adding another weapon for quarterback Matthew Stafford, rather than address areas of greater need.
Andrew Perloff of Sports Illustrated hinted at that in his preseason analysis:
That is the type of talent Ebron has, though he has not made a major impact for the Lions to start his career. He can bring a dynamic element to the field, in the mold of other pass-catching tight ends that have risen to prominence in recent years, but first he needs to stay on the field and be utilized appropriately.
With Calvin Johnson dealing with an ankle injury, many expected Ebron to fill that explosive role for the Lions. Unfortunately, he has been sidelined and it isn't looking likely this season that he will meet his first-round expectations.
The bottom line is that Detroit invested heavily in Ebron's upside and must do what's best for him in the long term. Although it may mean sacrificing some production now, Ebron plays a physical position and can be spared until he recovers fully.
