In Memoradum Of Kevin McHale
I recently heard that Kevin Mchale decided in tandem with the Minnesota Timberwolves to part ways. Mchale was one of Minnesota's favorite sons. He played basketball at the UofM, was an inept GM for over a dozen years (he's been living off of that Kevin Garnett pick for YEARS) BUT the man could coach. The Wolves always showed improvement when McHale would take over the team after firing some inept coach (seemed to run in the franchise after Flip left)
While its being reported that McHale didn't like the travel or the losing he reported helped the Wolves big men constantly after practice. While i was disgusted by McHale the GM, and hated him as McHale the Celtic. I respect McHale the coach. If it was a matter of some security why couldn't the team give him more than one year to coach? It would appear that there is more than meets the eye. With all due respect to new wolves GM David Khan most coaches actually get more than one year to endear themselves to ownership and management. This is not a customer service job: it takes more than 90 days to figure things out.
McHale has had success with this team and I feel he would have been a great coach given a couple of years to work with this team on an everyday basis. Almost every publication i have read (espn, prosportsdaily, various minnesota newspapers) continually state that McHale wanted more than one year if he was going to coach. If it really came down to Khan not wanting to offer McHale more than one year...I say David Khan you're idiot and you have a long way to go before your team is respectable, might as well have a coach the players respect and will play hard for.
Kevin Mchale your time as GM does not excuse you, but asking for security was something you deserved...i mean they let you run the wolves despite public outcries for your head! A 3 year contract definitely would not have killed them.Plus as we all know there is no such thing as Job security in the NBA coaching ranks. Please just do us all a favor don't apply for anymore GM jobs
