Great Alaska Shootout 2013: Top Players to Watch on Tournament's Final Day

Patrick ClarkeJun 3, 2018

Although the 2013 Great Alaska Shootout is arguably the most low-profile November tournament, this year's field features some of the most electrifying players in college basketball.

While most casual fans won't be interested in a championship matchup between Harvard and TCU, the individual talent on display is sure to make for a worthwhile event. Plus, the tournament's final day will feature three other consolation matchups, one of which will be headlined by the tournament's brightest star.

Below we'll highlight a trio of players worth watching at the Great Alaska Shootout on Saturday.

Keifer Sykes, Green Bay

Following Friday's loss to Harvard, the best Green Bay can finish is third place at the Great Alaska Shootout. But with gifted scorer Keifer Sykes lighting it up at the moment, the Phoenix will have an excellent shot to knock off Tulsa on Saturday.

A junior guard out of Chicago, the 5'11" Sykes makes up for his lack of size with toughness and skill.

He scored 26 points on 59 percent shooting from the floor in Green Bay's loss to Harvard on Friday, and poured in 23 in the Phoenix's win over Pepperdine on Thanksgiving. Sykes' toughness was on display in that game, as he earned a dozen free-throw attempts and buried them all.

If there's an area where the junior must improve on Saturday it's from downtown. Sykes is just 3 for 10 from beyond the arc in the Great Alaska Shootout and is hitting just 23 percent of his long-range shots through five games this season after shooting 43 percent from distance a year ago.

Wesley Saunders, Harvard

Harvard junior guard Wesley Saunders has been lighting it up for the Crimson in Alaska over the past few days, averaging 19.5 points per game in two victories.

The 6'5", 215-pound Los Angeles native shot 8 of 13 from the field and pulled down nine rebounds in Harvard's win over Denver on Thanksgiving and was even better on Friday, scoring 20 points and reeling in seven boards to power Harvard to a 12-point win over Green Bay.

Thanks to Saunders' offensive efficiency and rebounding prowess, the Crimson are just one win away from being crowned Great Alaska Shootout champions.

Look for Saunders, who scored 18 points in Harvard's upset win over New Mexico in last year's NCAA Tournament, to make his presence felt early on in Saturday's championship game against TCU.

Amric Fields, TCU

TCU's impressive play and run to the championship game at the Great Alaska Shootout are due in large part to the return of star forward Amric Fields, who made his 2013-14 debut for the Horned Frogs last weekend after a lengthy recovery and rehab process following a knee injury suffered last year.

Since returning, Fields has scored at least 16 points in every game and stood out in TCU's hard-fought win over Tulsa on Friday, scoring a season-high 17 points before fouling out.

After sinking two of three shots from beyond the arc, Fields is now four of seven from downtown this season. Not bad for a 6'9", 220-pound forward.

While Fields' ability to score points from anywhere makes him a constant threat, TCU will need him to become a bigger factor on the glass on Saturday if it hopes to top Harvard in the title game to run its winning streak to five games.
