Turkey Day Tossup: Oakland Raiders (+7.5) over DALLAS COWBOYS
When an offense led by undrafted rookie quarterback Matt McGloin and former seventh-round running back Rashad Jennings is expected to cover a 7.5-point spread on Thanksgiving against America's team, it's easy to discount the Raiders.
That is, unless the two unheralded players continue maintaining their recent form. McGloin is just starting off his career, yet he has uncommon moxie and looks like he belongs in the NFL despite his drift to obscurity on draft day.
The hard running style of Jennings has paid dividends for Oakland, and has been more effective than what Darren McFadden has produced out of the backfield.
The Cowboys are 31st against the pass and 30th versus the run, thus opening the door for the Raiders offense to operate smoothly. Short weeks in the NFL tend to produce rather ugly games, for lack of a better word.
This has the makings of being one of those. Dallas pulled out a huge victory on the road against the New York Giants to get on top of the NFC East, and the Raiders lost a heartbreaker at home in Week 12 to Tennessee, 23-19.
With this quick of a turnaround, anything can happen. Considering how bad the Cowboys defense is, though, don't be surprised when Oakland pulls off one of the biggest upsets of the week and wins outright.
Prediction: Raiders 31, Cowboys 27
Sunday Special: Denver Broncos (-5) over KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
For the second time in three games, these two elite AFC West teams will tangle, this time at Arrowhead Stadium.
The Chiefs are hurting on defense, with Pro Bowl pass rushers Justin Houston and Tamba Hali both getting injured last week, when Kansas City surrendered 41 points in a loss to San Diego.
As reported by ESPN.com's Adam Teicher, Hali says he will be ready to go in Week 13 in spite of an ankle sprain. However, ESPN insider Adam Schefter's sources say that Houston's dislocated elbow will keep him out of action:
Kansas City did not sack Peyton Manning when it last faced him in Week 11, and The Sheriff made one of the league's best defenses pay, throwing for 323 yards and a touchdown in the 27-17 victory.
Others will have to step up in lieu of Houston, but it won't be enough to stop Manning and Co. Especially after blowing a 24-point lead and losing in overtime last week, it's hard to imagine Manning not bouncing back with a big, winning performance here.
Prediction: Broncos 34, Chiefs 21
Monumental Monday: SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (-5) over New Orleans Saints
One of the Saints' biggest weaknesses is defending the run, which is bad news in facing a Seattle offense spearheaded by physical running back Marshawn Lynch and driven by dual-threat QB Russell Wilson.
Plus, playmaking wide receiver Percy Harvin figures to be a bigger part of the game plan after making his Seahawks debut in Week 11 and having a bye to get acclimatized to the gridiron once again.
Seattle's "Legion of Boom" secondary has thinned recently, but it still has lockdown cornerback Richard Sherman and star safeties Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor—all of whom bring imposing size and uncanny instincts to the defensive backfield.
That will make life difficult for prolific Saints signal-caller Drew Brees, whose favorite target, stud tight end Jimmy Graham, is facing a defense that has given up more than 61 yards to an opposing tight end in only two games this season, per Graham's ESPN.com profile.
Brees' QB counterpart has also yet to lose a game in his young career at CenturyLink Field. That trend won't change this week.
Look for Seattle to keep the ball away from Brees enough and for Wilson's mobility to be the difference against the exotic schemes of New Orleans defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. That will give the Seahawks a big head-to-head edge in this battle between the NFC's top two teams.
Prediction: Seahawks 24, Saints 17
