Stars to Watch
The Rebels...Figuratively and Literally
Jarvis Summers
The 6'3" shooting guard from Mississippi has been dynamic this season. Through four games, he's averaging 18.7 points, shooting 51.2 percent from the field and knocking down 44.4 percent of his three-pointers. He's one-half of an explosive Rebels backcourt that could give any opposing defense nightmares.
Marshall Henderson
Henderson is controversial and immature, but he can shoot. He was suspended for the Rebels' season opener, but showed no rust in the two games that followed. He's averaging 14 points per game and has made 45.5 percent of his shots from long distance.
If he stays focused, he'll continue to have a great year and move on to a successful career at the next level. Every team can use a floor-spacing sharpshooter who exudes confidence on the floor.
Nittany Lions Duo
Tim Frazier
Upperclassmen in the backcourt will be Penn State's best weapons this season. None is more dangerous than senior Tim Frazier. The fifth-year senior is averaging 18.3 points and a career-high 7.3 assists for the Lions. He ruptured his Achilles tendon last season and was granted another year of eligibility. He's clearly making the most of it.
While his scoring is something Nittany Lions fans have come to expect from Frazier, his playmaking is vastly improved. He finally has another scorer to feed and he doesn't have to carry as much of the offensive load.
Who's his partner in crime? See below.
D.J. Newbill
The powerfully built 6'4" guard from Philadelphia has really stepped up in his junior season. When Frazier went down last season, Newbill responded by averaging 16.3 points per game. Instead of fading to the background with Frazier back on the court, Newbill has built on his success as a sophomore.
So far this season, he's right behind Frazier in scoring averaging at 18 points per game.
St. John's Eye of the Storm
D'Angelo Harrison
The Red Storm will be the clear hometown favorites, with Harrison depended upon to provide the offensive punch. He has slowed down a bit since scoring 27 points in St. John's opener and then 25 his next time out, but he's a natural scorer with a knack for getting to the line.
Harrison is averaging 5.8 free throws per game and that has helped to offset his struggles from the field. He's making 39 percent of his shots and 22.9 percent from three-point range.
Boosted by the adrenaline from the home crowd, Harrison could be prepped for a big performance in Brooklyn.
