Michigan State remained on top after an undefeated week. The No. 1 Spartans took out Portland, Virginia Tech and Oklahoma over the past seven days to retain their lofty position after stealing it away from Kentucky to start the campaign.
Kansas held on to No. 2 with wins over Iona and Towson. The Jayhawks are now 4-0 and should remain undefeated heading into their anticipated clashes with Florida and New Mexico in back-to-back contests.
Louisville fell hard this week, as the No. 9 Cardinals dropped six spots after losing 93-84 to North Carolina on Sunday night. It was a marquee win for the Tar Heels, who climbed eight spots to No. 16.
Kentucky played just one game over the past seven days, winning big against the Texas-Arlington Mavericks. The No. 3 Wildcats definitely deserved the time off after a hot start through a packed schedule.
One-loss Duke stayed steady in the rankings after a near-meltdown. The No. 6 Blue Devils were fortunate to survive Vermont unscathed and needed a go-ahead free throw with seconds left to oust the Catamounts.
Star freshman Jabari Parker—who scored 26 points in the win—had this to say about how his team needs to better prepare, per GoDuke.com:
"Every team is going to face us like we're the best, because on paper it says that and across our chests it says that. We just have to be prepared to treat teams, every time, to be competitors and be the best that we can be because they're not going to shy up on us.
"
Arizona didn’t have any of those issues against its soft opponents this week. The Wildcats obliterated Fairleigh Dickinson and Rhode Island to move up to No. 4.
No. 5 Oklahoma State pulled off one of the most convincing early-season wins of the season. Marcus Smart guided his Cowboys to a 101-80 victory over Memphis. The Tigers fell 10 spots in the polls to No. 21 after that 21-point shellacking by the Pokes.
Rounding out the Top 10 this week are No. 7 Ohio State, No. 8 Syracuse and No. 10 Wisconsin. Each of these teams went undefeated in Week 3 and didn’t have its position in the polls change drastically.
Other notable results in Week 3 included VCU’s loss to Florida State. The unranked Seminoles pulled off the upset and are now lurking just outside the Top 25, while the Rams have spiraled out of the polls following a second loss this week to unranked Georgetown.
Previously unranked UMass shocked New Mexico 81-65. The Minutemen moved in at No. 24 with the win, while New Mexico dropped out of the rankings.
The week’s final notable upset came from Charlotte. The 49ers edged Michigan 63-61, as the Wolverines dropped eight spots to No. 22.
