FC Basel vs. Chelsea: Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info and Preview

Patrick ClarkeNov 25, 2013

Chelsea will look to build on their dominant performance against West Ham when they clash with Basel on Tuesday in a pivotal Champions League showdown.

The Swiss club currently trail the Group E leaders by four points, but can close the gap considerably with an impressive victory at St. Jakob-Park. The Bebbi have already knocked off Chelsea once this year, delivering a shocking upset win at Stamford Bridge two months ago.

However, Murat Yakin's squad have struggled since, picking up just two points over their last three group matches.

Top Storyline: Chelsea Aim to Put Stranglehold on Group E

Jose Mourinho's Blues can secure a berth in the Champions League knockout stage with a victory at St. Jakob-Park on Tuesday. But doing so will be much easier said than done.

After all, Chelsea's only loss in Group E came at the hands of Basel back in mid-September.

Chelsea have won three straight Champions League tilts since, but are likely still motivated by their collapse at Stamford Bridge, in which they let a 1-0 lead get away after conceding twice in the final 20 minutes.

Keep in mind that since surrendering two goals to Basel, Chelsea have turned up the heat defensively in Champions League play, outscoring their last three opponents by a combined mark of 10-0. Not only will Basel have to overcome that stifling defense, but they'll have to find a way to keep Chelsea's offensive weapons in check as well.

Prediction

While there's no denying that Basel were the more deserving club in these two teams' first matchup back in September, it's hard to argue the Bebbi weren't outplayed for significant stretches.

Chelsea controlled possession for the most partretaining the ball for 57 percent of the matchand out-shot Basel 12-6.

Look for a similar match to unfold on Tuesday with Chelsea playing the aggressor role once again. But this time, watch for the English powerhouse to return the favor on the scoreboard.

The Blues are confident and flying high following Saturday's dismantling of West Ham and won't want to squander a golden opportunity to seal their fate for the knockout stage.
