Trey Burke out 8-12 Weeks After Surgery on Fractured Index Finger
The rebuilding Utah Jazz suffered a major blow this weekend when starting rookie point guard Trey Burke broke his finger in a preseason matchup against Los Angeles Clippers. On Monday, the team announced via Twitter that Burke is scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday:
According to Jody Genessy of the Deseret News, Burke is expected to miss the first few weeks of the regular season, which the Jazz kick off on Oct. 30:
The injury occurred in the first quarter of Saturday's exhibition matchup in Salt Lake City, when Burke appeared to hurt his finger while hitting an opponent as he made a bounce pass. Burke immediately grabbed his right hand and was taken off the court with a trainer:
Last year, Burke burst into the nationwide spotlight with a stellar sophomore season at Michigan, scoring 18.6 points and 6.7 assists per game en route to being named consensus National Player of the Year. The Jazz made a draft-day trade for Burke, the No. 9 overall selection, in the 2013 draft with the expectations that he'd take over as the team's starting point guard.
But with him on the mend and unheralded backups occupying the bench, the Jazz have already been mentioned in trade rumors. Marc Stein of ESPN.com suggested the team could be looking at Chicago's second-year point guard Marquis Teague:
Matt Moore of CBS Sports also speculated that Jazz big man Jeremy Evans could be a good fit for the Bulls.
Aaron Falk of the Salt Lake Tribune relayed comments from Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin, who didn't dismiss the idea of trying to trade for another point guard:
For any basketball fan, it's too bad when a player as talented as Burke goes down with an injury. Kurt Helin of Pro Basketball Talk even picked Burke to win Rookie of the Year.
For Jazz fans, it also means they have to wait to see the player who is supposed to fill the major void at point guard that's been empty since Deron Williams left for the Nets.
