RG3 and 10 NFL Players Searching for Redemption in Week 2

Scott CarasikJun 6, 2018

Robert Griffin III had a bad first week back from injury and looked rusty in the 2013 season opener; however, he's not alone. There are 10 guys who wish they could have had this week back and will need to gain redemption in week 2.

All of these men had something in their game that they need to improve upon for the coming week that was their Achilles' heel in the opener. Follow along as we examine which players need to redeem themselves in Week 2.

Eric Decker, WR, Denver Broncos

1 of 10

Week 1 Results

Two catches for 32 yards, three dropped passes, one fumble on seven targets.

What He Needs to Fix

He needs to fix his ball security first and foremost. Three drops and one fumble show a complete lack of focus. Despite Manning having a record-tying game with seven touchdown passes and over 400 yards, not a single one was to Decker and toward the end of the game, Manning quit targeting him.

This Week's Expectations

For Decker to get back to where he was last season, he needs to catch every pass that hits him in the hands. If he can get five catches for 60 yards, the Broncos will get the Decker that they wanted to see in the opener.

Cortland Finnegan, CB, St. Louis Rams

2 of 10

Week 1 Results

Seven tackles, one missed tackle, allowed six catches on seven targets for 96 yards and a TD for a perfect 158.3 passer rating.

What He Needs to Fix

Coverage. Coverage. And coverage. He was covering mainly the slot man Andre Roberts and the No. 1 Larry Fitzgerald. Atlanta's slot man Harry Douglas and No. 1s of Julio Jones and Roddy White are going to be scary for him to face.

This Week's Expectations

This week, he has to get his hand on a ball and force a pass deflection of some sort. It will be tough with whom he's facing as the Falcons receiving corps is arguably the best in the NFL. If he can limit them to under 50 yards allowed, he should end up as an asset this week and not the liability he was last week.

David Wilson, RB, New York Giants

3 of 10

Week 1 Results

Seven carries, 19 yards, two fumbles, two fumbles lost.

What He Needs to Fix

David Wilson needs to hold onto the football. A little league coach would make him run 10 laps for his failure there. He needs to spend some time watching what Tiki Barber did to fix his fumbling issues that plagued him in the middle part of his career.

This Week's Expectations

Honestly, Wilson needs to ride the bench for another week. Really beat it into his psyche that ball security is the most important thing in the NFL. Then, have guys come after the ball in practice until he never drops one. Once he can hold onto it with no fumbles for a week straight, start him.

Offseason Moves for Every Team 👉

Chad Greenway, LB, Minnesota Vikings

4 of 10

Week 1 Results

Eight tackles, one missed tackle, minus-3.1 run defense grade, four catches allowed on five targets for 123 yards and a touchdown for a perfect 158.3 passer rating allowed.

What He Needs to Fix

Chad Greenway is a great football player, but sometimes, players are still rusty from the offseason. Greenway was specifically attacked in the game plan and had trouble covering Reggie Bush out of the backfield while also getting swallowed in some blocks.

This Week's Expectations

A ton of tackles is Greenway's game, but expect him to bounce back in coverage without having to go against the same kind of speed disadvantage that Bush presented. Also, look for some more pass rushes than the three he had this past week.

Duane Brown, LT, Houston Texans

5 of 10

Week 1 Results

One sack, two hits and five hurries allowed on 48 pass blocking snaps, minus-0.4 run-blocking grade.

What He Needs to Fix

While his run blocking was right on par for the league, his pass blocking was terrible. It was the worst pass-blocking game that he's had since his rookie season. Brown will have to fix it this week so that Schaub can continue to have a clean pocket to throw in.

This Week's Expectations

Instead of matching up with Dwight Freeney this week, he'll go against the Titans' Kamerion Wimbley. He matches up better with the bigger, stronger pass-rushers. Brown should end up with a good bounce-back game that should look more like his 2012 Pro Bowl form than his rookie form.

Darnell Dockett, DL, Arizona Cardinals

6 of 10

Week 1 Results

One tackle, one missed tackle, one hurry on 33 pass rushing snaps, minus-4.5 run-stuffing grade.

What He Needs to Fix

Darnell Dockett mainly needs to become the run-stuffer he normally is again. The highly negative grade is out of his normal abilities. Also, he needs to get off the snap more quickly to create more pressure in the passing game.

This Week's Expectations

This week, he gets to face a worse offensive lineman than the former top pick of Jake Long. Dockett should end up being more effective against the Lions as both a pass-rusher and run-stuffer.

Ed Dickson, TE, Baltimore Ravens

7 of 10

Week 1 Results

One catch for 13 yards on five targets with two drops, minus-2.4 run-blocking grade on 17 run-blocking snaps.

What He Needs to Fix

Everything. With Dennis Pitta out, Ed Dickson isn't even the starting tight end like he should be. And dropping a pair of balls when he's supposed to be that primary intermediate option over the middle isn't going to help him out.

This Week's Expectations

This week, he needs to go out there and catch everything thrown his way. His blocking has to improve quite a bit as well because if he wants to see more playing time, it's going to be as an all-around player and not just as a receiver.

Michael Huff, S, Baltimore Ravens

8 of 10

Week 1 Results

Two tackles, one missed tackle, five catches allowed on five targets for 181 yards and three touchdowns for a perfect 158.3 passer rating allowed.

What He Needs to Fix

When the Ravens signed Michael Huff to replace the legendary Ed Reed, no one expected him to be this poor in coverage. The three touchdowns allowed is embarrassing, and Huff will have to step it up or the Ravens could just bench him for Matt Elam.

This Week's Expectations

This week, he should be much better as he's not going against DeMaryius Thomas, Wes Welker, Julius Thomas or Peyton Manning. Against the Browns, Huff should be able to settle into the defense and run a deep third every play. This is his best role and one that should allow him to not look completely inept.

Lamar Holmes, RT, Atlanta Falcons

9 of 10

Week 1 Results

One sack, two hits and five hurries allowed on 43 pass blocks, minus-1.5 run-blocking grade.

What He Needs to Fix

Confidence in his technique was lacking as he seemed tentative. He was getting demolished in one-on-one matchups with Cameron Jordan and Akiem Hicks all day. This wasn't in just pass blocking but also in run blocking. Conditioning also hurt as he tapered down after the half.

This Week's Expectations

After another week of practice and finally seeing a full game's worth of action, Holmes should be able to get into a better rhythm this week. Add in that the coaching staff should see that more runs and screens need to be called, and the Falcons can mask the weaknesses of the massive tackle while he develops on the job.

Robert Griffin III, QB, Washington Football Team

10 of 10

Week 1 Results

Thirty-for-49 (61.2 percent) for 329 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions, one fumble, five rushes for 24 yards.

What He Needs to Fix

Robert Griffin looked completely rusty out there like he hadn't seen live action in a year—because he hadn't. He needed to shake the rust off and unfortunately, that took him a complete half of the opener to do. By then it was way too late.

This Week's Expectations

While his opponent is better on paper this week, he will finally have the rust knocked off and should be more than ready to go. With a fresh RG3, the Washington football team could finally return to the form that led it to an NFC East title last year.
