Manchester United Transfer News: David Moyes Must Deliver on Transfer Commitment
Manchester United supporters are still waiting for a marquee signing. Despite countless rumors and endless speculation over the summer, the club still haven't been able to finalize the first major deal of the David Moyes era at Old Trafford.
Even though United are the defending Premier League champions, there's always a sense during the transfer window that other clubs, in this case Manchester City and Chelsea, will pass them by if they remain stagnant.
So far, that's been the case for the Red Devils. Yet, Moyes isn't losing confidence in the club's ability to bring in players before the transfer window closes early next month. He told Sky Sports they are still working hard to add pieces.
"I'm confident we will have players in.
We are involved in several players we are looking at, and that will continue.
Will we get them before the deadline? I hope so, but we are working very hard to do so.
"
The former Everton boss must walk a fine line with transfer comments. By stating he's confident players will be brought in, it causes anticipation to build within the fanbase. If he expects signings, supporters obviously believe there will be signings. His word carries more weight than any rumor.
Yet, on the flip side, it also causes the pressure to increase dramatically. If he keeps talking about potential additions to an already solid squad and they end up not arriving before the window closes, the disappointment will be paramount.
He's assured a fanbase expecting another title run that there will be signings. Now, he better find a way to deliver on that commitment.
Of course, Moyes is basically being forced to relearn the transfer market on the fly. He arrived at Old Trafford from Everton, where the resources and expectations for transfers were on a completely different level. There was far less pressure to make a notable signing.
Now, he's got the resources necessary to bring in elite players, but he's quickly learning that simply having the funds doesn't mean a deal is going to get done. In many cases, other clubs are going to fight tooth and nail to keep their main assets.
The Cesc Fabregas chase, which is mentioned in the Sky Sports report, is an example of United's lackluster window to this point. He would be a perfect fit for Red Devils, but Barcelona rejected their multiple efforts.
Moyes had to shift focus, leading to a new round of rumors. In recent days, United have been linked to Real Madrid duo Luka Modric and Mesut Ozil (via ESPN) and Tottenham superstar Gareth Bale (via The Independent).
A playmaking midfielder should definitely be near the top of Moyes' to-do list. Whether any of those players are realistic options is up for debate.
That said, Moyes is now on the hot seat to deliver an impact signing before the window closes, whether it's Modric, Ozil, Bale or another high-profile player.
United open the new Premier League campaign on Saturday against Swansea. But Sept. 2, the date the transfer window shuts, remains a key focus for Moyes as well.
