NHL Rumors: Roberto Luongo, Brendan Morrow and Latest Offseason Chatter
The 2013 NHL draft is over and free agency is underway, and the rumors surrounding Roberto Luongo, Brendan Morrow and others have the offseason heading toward an unpredictable ending.
All of the following chatter has the NHL rumor mill heating up and could shake the league to its core if these deals come to fruition.
Roberto Luongo Not Sold on Vancouver?
The Vancouver Canucks made it clear that the franchise wanted veteran Roberto Luongo back in net when it dealt Cory Schneider to the New Jersey Devils on draft day, per Kevin Allen of the USA Today.
According to RDS' insider, Renaud Lavoie, Luongo may not want to return to the Canucks, though:
Vancouver has been handcuffed by Luongo’s monstrous contract—$5.3 million per season through 2022, per CapGeek—and with the chance that Luongo has been emotionally damaged too much during the ordeal of trying to trade his rights, the franchise took a huge risk.
If Luongo forces his way off the Canucks' roster, this would be devastating loss to the team.
Detroit Red Wings Interested in Brendan Morrow?
The Detroit Red Wings are a team that is trying to find the right mix of veterans to complement to strong core of young players. While adding Daniel Alfredsson via free agency was a great move, per the CBC, the franchise needs more.
According to Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News, the Red Wings could be looking to add a veteran presence with former Dallas Stars captain Brendan Morrow:
While Morrow isn’t the offensive juggernaut he once was, there is no doubt that talented veteran could still add enough offensive touch on a second or third line to warrant a place on the roster.
Add in the elite forechecking ability of Morrow, and the defensive-minded Red Wings would be the perfect landing spot for the former captain.
Ryan Miller Drawing Interest From St. Louis Blues?
The St. Louis Blues have been tied to several possible trades this offseason, but no deal could hold a candle to the magnitude of a possible deal with the Buffalo Sabres for veteran goalie netminder Ryan Miller, according to ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun:
Miller is one of the best goaltenders in the NHL. If the Sabres don’t feel that the veteran is the goalie of the future, they must move him while the reward is high and he can’t leave as a free agent.
If the Blues can pull off this deal while including one of the team’s current netminders in the trade, this would be a blockbuster that helps St. Louis become a serious favorite in the Western Conference.
